Caroline Spurgeon is known as the first female university professor in London, the second in England. In 1935, Spurgeon wrote this pioneer study on the use of images in William Shakespeare's opus. In it she analyses the different types of images and motifs that he uses in his plays. She also shows that there is a "cluster", or there are several "clusters", of images in each of the major plays, for instance, illness and injury images in "Hamlet", and light and darkness images in "Romeo and Juliet". Remains a classic study to this day.

2017 Reprint of 1916 Edition.  Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software.  “The Lesser Key of Solomon,” also known as “Clavicula Salomonis Regis” or “Lemegeton,” is an anonymous grimoire (or spell book) on demonology.  It was compiled in the mid-17th century, mostly from materials a couple of centuries older.  It is divided into five books—the Ars Goetia, Ars Theurgia-Goetia, Ars Paulina, Ars Almadel, and Ars Notoria.  This edition was edited by L. W. De Laurence and first published in 1916.  Though considered  a plagiarism of the Mathers/Crowley edition, it is none the less an interesting contribution to the history of the literature and a scarce book in its own right.  Profusely illustrated.

The main idea in Julian Rotter's social learning theory is that personality represents an interaction of the individual with his or her environment. One cannot speak of a personality, internal to the individual, that is independent of the environment. Neither can one focus on behavior as being an automatic response to an objective set of environmental stimuli. Rather, to understand behavior, one must take both the individual (i.e., his or her life history of learning and experiences) and the environment (i.e., those stimuli that the person is aware of and responding to) into account. Rotter describes personality as a relatively stable set of potentials for responding to situations in a particular way. Julian B. Rotter has been cited as one of the 100 most eminent psychologists of the 20th century and is still much cited.

2017 Reprint of 1926 Edition.  Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software.  A privateer was a private person or ship that engaged in maritime warfare under a commission of war.  The commission, also known as a letter of marque, empowered the person to carry on all forms of hostility permissible at sea by the usages of war, including attacking foreign vessels during wartime and taking them as prizes. Captured ships were subject to condemnation and sale under prize law, with the proceeds divided between the privateer sponsors, ship owners, captains and crew.  A percentage share usually went to the issuer of the commission.  Since robbery under arms was common to seaborne trade, all merchant ships were already armed.  During war, naval resources were auxiliary to operations on land so privateering was a way of subsidizing state power by mobilizing armed ships and sailors.  Chapin’s work covers the first century of American colonial privateering, 1625-1725.  This includes the not only the American colonies, but the Caribbean colonies as well.  A title that is very difficult to find on the second hand market.

2017 Reprint of 1919 Edition. “Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution” is a 1902 work by Russian anarchist philosopher Peter Kropotkin. Kropotkin explores the role of mutually-beneficial cooperation and reciprocity (or "mutual aid") in the animal kingdom and human societies both past and present. It is an argument against the competition-centered theories of so-called social Darwinism, as well as the romantic depictions of cooperation presented by writers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who argued it was motivated by universal love rather than self-interest. “Mutual Aid” is considered a fundamental text in anarchist communism, presenting a scientific basis for communism alternative to the historical materialism of the Marxists. Many biologists also consider it an important catalyst in the scientific study of cooperation.
