Right from the enslavement era through to the colonial and contemporary eras, Africans have been denied their human essence - portrayed as indistinct from animals or beasts for imperial burdens, Africans have been historically dispossessed and exploited. Postulating the theory of global jurisprudential apartheid, the book accounts for biases in various legal systems, norms, values and conventions that bind Africans while affording impunity to Western states. Drawing on contemporary notions of animism, transhumanism, posthumanism and science and technology studies, the book critically interrogates the possibility of a jurisprudence of anticipation which is attentive to the emergent New World Order that engineers 'human beings to become nonhumans' while 'nonhumans become humans'. There is no discussion on Africa today that does not make reference to the contradiction that exists between its wealth of natural resources and the poverty of most of its people. Africa is not a poor continent, and not all Africans are poor. Yet Africa is depicted as the world's poorest continent, where the majority of people live with no access to clean water, decent health care, education and electricity, and struggle to survive in the face of high levels of unemployment, poverty and inequality. This is the reality we see all around the continent. The reason, according to Professor Tatah Mentan, is that extractive foreign industries and the competition to access natural resources envelop parasitic African governments in a web of unaccountability, corruption, repression, and rent-seeking. The love affair between many African governments and international corporations--and the optimistic power of the "Africa rising" narrative--are obscuring harsh realities, namely that many Africans are deprived of benefiting from the exploitation of their own natural resources. In many of these high growth countries, citizens now believe that they are paying too high a price for economic growth, which does not trickle down to them. There is a new wind blowing across the continent and it is bringing with it increasing demands for Africa's resources to benefit Africans. And past relations between extractive imperialists and puppet African governments are under scrutiny. This book dissects the dynamics of the politics of natural resource extraction in Africa that resolves into a matter of class struggle. This class struggle is visible at the level of combatting the workings of capitalism and imperialism in the interest of the dominant international class of corporatocrats and its African parasitic class, and simultaneously mobilizing forces against those exploitative and oppressive interests. Tatah Mentan's book is therefore a MUST READ for students, researchers, social scientists examining the political economy of contemporary imperialism, policy makers, and corporate managers.

The Open Veins of Africa: The Dynamics of Extractive Accumulation by Dispossession in 21st Century Africa

At the heart of 21st century discourses are questions of whose lives may matter more than others. While the debates themselves are not new, the #hashtags they are linked to and the media through which concerns around moralities of living together are expressed allow for debates to reach large numbers of people in accelerated, individualised and accessible ways. The new media have been powerful in (re)igniting debates and (re)activating demands for social change. Yet, the focus of ubiquitous #hashtags on binary positions may render it easy to neglect their nuances and facets. In recognition of grey-zones, contradictions and ambiguities, this ethnography focuses on a suburb of Cape Town, Observatory, and its recently revived Neighbourhood Watch as an urban renewal project and attempt to decrease notions of vulnerability to crime and violence. In Observatory – considered to be liberal and bohemian by its inhabitants – the framing of topics within the Neighbourhood Watch group often take on an abstract, intellectualised form. Nevertheless, the group with its rather clashing ideals is grounded in and fuelled by recycled crime stories as well as snapshots of suspected criminals that continue to reappear via various social media channels. Individual experiences, stories and inner conflicts of local Neighbourhood Watch members are at the centre of this exploratory engagement with how fear becomes embodied, everyday practice and the ways in which desires for relationality and spatial exclusivity become entangled in a place where every life matters only in principle.

Through a careful allusive poetic composition process, the poet takes on the aberrant oppression that a mad egocentric individual at the helm of a train forces upon his passengers and not without their complicity, and who while boarding the train are fully aware the train is one of doom. The poem comes across as the poet's reconstruction of the wrong turn in world politics from the wreckage and random distemper of a particular irate ruler with neither political modicum/wit nor understanding of the true functioning of democracy. The poem memorializes the chaos and contemporizes America in a bid to arm the oppressed with the powerful weapon that is memory.
