Is capitalism coming to an end in a manner somewhat similar to communism in the USSR? Events certainly bode ill for the classic view that capitalism will prevail as the greatest source of economic growth and stability. Dr. Mentan maintains that the study of contemporary capitalism must entail both the interrogation of the capitalist mode of production as an abstract-formal object and investigation of the diverse historical forms that capitalism has taken across time and space. The main argument of this book is that while globalization may reflect a set of very definite technological, economic, and cultural changes, the shape of its significance and its future trends are far from being rosy for mankind as a whole. The historical specificity of this process does not necessarily guarantee a symmetrical or homogeneous impact worldwide since its victims are in billions while their beneficiaries are just a tiny percentage of the world s population. This account of globalization is quite different from the neoliberal account, a discourse about progress and a rising tide that lifts all boats, a discourse that takes advantage of the historical processes of globalization in order to valorize particular economic prescriptions about how to operate the economy (through free trade, deregulation, and so on) -- and by implication, prescriptions about how to transform economics, politics, and culture. In one widely influential distinction, there are two primary forces at work in the rise of globalization: globalization from above, a process that primarily affects the elites within and across national contexts, and globalization from below, a popular process that primarily draws from the rank-and-file in civil society. This contrast highlights an important political dynamic (and it makes for a handy, hopeful picture of struggle and resistance on a world scale) but its widespread use obscures the ways in which these two trends are not entirely independent of one another. For example, the groups from ''above'' and ''below'' tend to merge in certain nongovernmental organizations; and the popular movements ''from below'' may still be perceived in certain local contexts as an imposition ''from above.'' Still other dualities prevail: of tensions between the global and the local; between economic and cultural dimensions of globalization; between globalization viewed as a trend toward homogenization around Western (or, even more narrowly, around American) norms and culture, and globalization viewed as an era of increased contact between diverse cultures, leading to an increase in hybridization and novelty; and between the material and rhetorical effects of globalization or, as it might be put, between globalization and ''globalization.'' Finally, there is the distinction about whether globalization is a ''good thing''; or not: Is globalization beneficial to the cause of economic growth, equality, and justice, or is it harmful? Advancing the Global Empire: The Janus Face of the Corporate Struggles for Wealth and Power

There is no discussion on Africa today that does not make reference to the contradiction that exists between its wealth of natural resources and the poverty of most of its people. Africa is not a poor continent, and not all Africans are poor. Yet Africa is depicted as the world's poorest continent, where the majority of people live with no access to clean water, decent health care, education and electricity, and struggle to survive in the face of high levels of unemployment, poverty and inequality. This is the reality we see all around the continent. The reason, according to Professor Tatah Mentan, is that extractive foreign industries and the competition to access natural resources envelop parasitic African governments in a web of unaccountability, corruption, repression, and rent-seeking. The love affair between many African governments and international corporations--and the optimistic power of the "Africa rising" narrative--are obscuring harsh realities, namely that many Africans are deprived of benefiting from the exploitation of their own natural resources. In many of these high growth countries, citizens now believe that they are paying too high a price for economic growth, which does not trickle down to them. Journalism is one of the most important professions today. Without it, large swaths of the world similarly might have remained "dark, impoverished, tortured," because few people would have been aware of the nature and depth of the atrocities therein. You can't fix what you can't find. Indeed, we have only to look at places today where journalists must risk their lives to do their jobs-places such as Central Europe, the Philippines, Mexico, Myanmar, Russia, Turkey, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Cameroun, Afghanistan, and too many others-to appreciate anew what an incalculable difference the media make, reporting on wars, famines, genocide, and the tyrants who green-light them. This book critically analyzes the complex relationship between the African state and capitalist globalization. It describes in great detail the significant effects of the various historical trajectories of global capitalist expansion on the nature and functions of the African state while focusing on the present triumph of globalized neo-liberalism on the African continent. The history of the state in Africa has been misread and misinterpreted through the Eurocentric convictions of European African scholars alike. The State in Africa has, since its colonial inception, has served as the best possible political shell for capitalism, enabling it to penetrate, again possession and establish itself firmly and securely, regardless of institutional and leadership instability at the helm. The glaring artificiality of the state in Africa, coupled with the failure of the local ruling classes to rise above the limitations of their provenance, is to blame for the myriad crises of one-party authoritarianism, violent coups and military dictatorship. It is also to blame for the progressive alienation of the African people, and the prevailing crises of identity and citizenship. Independence does not seem to have changed much, as the state is still controlled by the most powerful foreign, economically dominant class, which, has appropriated political power as well to further compound the subjection and exploitation of the oppressed Africans. Today the continent continues to grapple with underdevelopment, civil wars, intra-state conflicts, political instability, state failure and outright collapse, thus calling into question the viability and survivability of the Westphalian state model in Africa.

The State in Africa. An Analysis of Impacts of Historical Trajectories of Global Capitalist Expansion and Domination in the Continent

Globalization is a term that describes the contradictory economic, political, and cultural processes of world capitalist integration. Although capitalism has been of a global character since the 1400s, the current phase of globalization is manifest by emergent transnational institutions, changing relations between multinational corporations and assaulted paradise of sovereign nation-states and the development of a global monoculture of consumption among feuding class divides. This book examines the relationship between globalization and nation states, the dynamics, contradictions, and crisis of global capitalism, and the developing and maturing class struggles and the prospects for social change and transformation of global capitalism. It examines these class struggles within the context of the globalization of capital and draws out the political implications of this process for the future course of capitalist development on a world scale. In this book Tatah Mentan drives home the point that contemporary neoliberal globalization is in fact an advanced stage of capitalist hegemonism and that the contradictions of 21st century globalization are thus a projection of the contradictions of capitalism on a global scale, with all its inherent exploitative characteristics and militarized class conflicts that will lead to the revolutionary transformation of vulture capitalist society. He argues that dominant global processes are not an immutable feature of capitalism, but are contested by social class actors across these three dimensions.
