Kodojin, the "Old Taoist" (1865-1944), was the last of these great poet-painters in Japan. Under the support of various patrons, he composed a number of Taoist-influenced Chinese and Japanese poems and did lively and delightful ink paintings, continuing the tradition of the poet-sage who devotes himself to study of the ancients, lives quietly and modestly, and creates art primarily for himself and his friends. Portraying this last representative of a tradition of gentle and refined artistry in the midst of a society that valued economic growth and national achievement above all, this beautifully illustrated book brings together 150 of Kodojin's Chinese poems (introduced and translated by Jonathan Chaves), more than 100 of his haiku and tanka (introduced and translated by Stephen Addiss), and many examples of his calligraphy and ink paintings. Addiss's in-depth introduction details the importance of the poet-painter tradition, outlines the life of Kodojin, and offers a critical appraisal of his work, while J. Thomas Rimer's essay puts the literary work of the Old Taoist in context.

Wu Li (1632-1718) was one of the orthodox masters of early Ching dynasty painting, but his reputation as a painter, even in his own life-time, obscured his achievement as a poet. His real originality, however, lies in the unprecedented boldness of his experimental creation: a Chinese Christian poetry, utterly traditional in its use of shih and chu forms and such devices as parallelism and allusion, while equally unconventional in being based on orthodox Christian theology. The conversion experience that led Wu Li to become a member of the Jesuit society, and eventually to be ordained as one of the first Chinese Catholic priests, is explored in Singing of the Source in the context of widespread intellectual and spiritual ferment in the early Ching. Jonathan Chaves elucidates events that would lead a Chinese scholar deeply immersed in Neo-Confucianism and Buddhism to take the enormous leap to Christianity and then be inspired to compose Christian poetry in classical Chinese forms. This work will be of interest to scholars of Chinese literature and art history as well as readers in Chinese intellectual and religious history.

Yang Wan-Li (1127–1206) is one of China’s “four masters of Southern Sung poetry.” These poems were written at what could be seen as a low point in Sung history: an invasion by the Jurchens had forced the Sung to flee to the southern city of Hangchow. But they created at Hangchow a refuge of elegant solitude from which they gazed longingly toward the north, and in this quiet setting, they were able to enjoy the beauties of nature. Many of the poems are perfect verbalizations of the magnificent landscape paintings of the Sung painters: misty, ethereal and luminous. The poetry, however, also holds the annoyances of overwork, aching feet, creaking bones and the pleasures of wine, filling it with humanity and a zest for living.

Ike Taiga (1723-1776) and his wife Tokuyama Gyokuran (1727-1784) were preeminent artists in 18th-century Japan. This landmark book--the only comprehensive survey available in English—focuses on the lives and times of these artists and accompanies the first-ever exhibition devoted to their work in the United States.Considered by contemporaries to be an eccentric marvel, indifferent to worldly preoccupations, Taiga is best known as an exponent of the so-called Nanga school of Chinese literati painting. He was hugely prolific and experimental, working in an impressive range of styles, techniques, compositions, and subjects to produce over 1,000 calligraphies and paintings, and many large-scale fusuma (sliding doors) and screens. While not as well known as her husband, Gyokuran was a significant artist and a well-regarded poet of Japanese verse. Taiga wrote poetry in Chinese, and translated poems by both artists are featured prominently in this volume.
