The Walhalla Plateau, part of the Grand Canyon's north rim, was the site of seasonal farming by prehistoric Pueblo Indians who later left behind their agricultural terraces and small stone farmhouses. During the winters, these farmers probably retreated to the warmer canyon below. This book presents data from the School of American Research's survey and excavation on the Walhalla Plateau, discussing the dynamics of settlement expansion and decline and the economic adaptation to this marginal, high-altitude environment.

Nancy Hunter Warren trained her camera on scenes rarely witnessed by outsiders-a Penitente service, the blessing of a ditch, feast days, religious processions, the interiors of houses and village churches. Her photographs, taken between 1973 and 1985, preserve a valuable record of rapidly vanishing traditions in the remote Hispanic villages of New Mexico.
Nancy Hunter Warren has been staff photographer for the Museum of New Mexico's Laboratory of Anthropology since 1974. Her work has been widely published and exhibited in the Southwest.

In 1984, while studying textiles in the collections of the School of American Research, Kate Peck Kent discovered a manuscript on Spanish-American weaving by the late H.P. Mera, curator of archaeology at Santa Fe's Lab of Anthropology. This forgotten manuscript describes the origin and history of the distinctive textiles woven by Spanish-Americans in New Mexico.
Kate Peck Kent was professor emerita of anthropology at the University of Denver, a research associate at the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and a resident scholar at the School of American Research. Dr. Kent has also written Pueblo Indian Textiles and Navajo Weaving: Three Centuries of Change which describes and interprets the textile collections at the School of American Research's Indian Arts Research Center.

When ethnohistorians Garrick and Roberta Bailey arrived in Farmington, New Mexico, in 1977 to conduct field research on the Navajos, they soon realized the truth of what they had been told by members of other tribes: Navajos weren't like other Indians. While many Native Americans have subordinated their tribal identity to their identity as Indians, unique historical circumstances have allowed the Navajos to maintain their uniqueness.
A History of the Navajos examines these circumstances over the century and more that the tribe has lived on the reservation. In 1868, the year that the United States government released the Navajos from four years of imprisonment at Bosque Redondo and created the Navajo reservation, their very survival was in doubt. In spite of conflicts over land and administrative control, by the 1890s they had achieved a greater level of prosperity than at any previous time in their history.
Economic disasters such as the drought of the 1890s and the government's program of livestock reduction in the 1930s did not compromise their rural integrity. Through two world wars, the change from a herding to a wage economy, the coming of the white man's schools and religions, and a growing desire on the part of young people to own the goods and emulate the ways of the predominant culture, Navajo social identity remains intact. As one of the authors' informants put it, "They're still Navajos."

On the Edge of Splendor: Exploring Grand Canyon's Human Past

Arroyo Hondo Pueblo, one of the largest fourteenth century sites in the northern Rio Grande region, was excavated by the School of American Research under the leadership of Douglas W. Schwartz between 1970 and 1974. In this eighth volume of the Arroyo Hondo Archaeological Series, Judith A. Habicht-Mauche presents a masterful description and interpretation of the pottery from Arroyo Hondo.
Habicht-Mauche builds on an exhaustive study of the mineralogical and chemical attributes of the ceramic assemblage to produce a penetrating evaluation of the stylistic diversity, origins, and changes through time of the pottery types found at Arroyo Hondo. From this analytic foundation, she draws larger conclusions on the structure of the pueblo's social and economic alliances and their significance for understanding population expansion, resource competition, regional trade, craft specialization, ethnic diversity, and the rise of tribal networks throughout the northern Rio Grande region.
In additional reports, Richard W. Lang provides an analysis and seriation of stratigraphic ceramic samples from the pueblo, and Anthony Thibodeau describes the miscellaneous ceramic artifacts including pipes, effigies, balls, and beads.
This volume also contains a final report on the stone artifacts from Arroyo Hondo, in which Carl J. Phagan accomplishes a comprehensive reconstruction and interpretation of the lithic data collected at the site in 1971-72 and 1973-74.
