The residents of a small town in Connecticut were surprised to learn a Pro-Nazi organization was building a Hitler-styled youth camp in their midst. The German-American Bund secretly purchased 178-acres of land just south of the main road. Their goal was to host 1,000 campers each week, with at least 10,000 visitors for weekends and special occasions at Camp General von Steuben. Southbury residents needed to come to terms with the situation quickly, and decide if they wanted Nazi philosophies to clash with their stanch New England values. A number of determined everyday heroes emerged who felt the need to do something, while the First Selectman was quietly trying to find legal means to stop the camp. Some people wrote letters or resolutions, while the pastors warned against the evil of Nazis. In spite of their differences in background or politics, the townspeople decided to establish a zoning commission to "keep Southbury much as it always was." In the process, the Bund land would be zoned as residential in the hopes of preventing Camp General von Steuben from being built.

There was a time when you could walk through Connecticut and find schoolhouses scattered across the landscape every few miles. In the mid-1800s, schoolhouses were located in districts so that a child would not have to walk more than two miles to school. The schools were literally everywhere: in the road, at the edge of the tobacco field, on top of a rocky hill, or next to the meeting house. Each schoolhouse was made for one teacher to "keep school" for all the neighborhood children aged 7-16. In 1852, there was a count of over 1600 schoolhouses. As the population changed, the school district borders changed,new schools were constructed, or old schools were moved to new locations.Now in the 21st century, you can still see old Connecticut schoolhouses and imagine what they would have been like in the old times. Connecticut is blessed with over a hundred renovated and restored schoolhouses which are open to the public thanks to the hard work of the communities and numerous historical societies.Compare the new photographs with the up to 130-year-old photos to see how the schools and terrain have changed or remained the same through time.

Southbury Through Time: Remnants of Our Past presents the quest to find vestiges of Southbury's existence from the earliest settlers in their everyday life, through religion, education, industry, and transportation. The town's location at the end of the Pomperaug Valley and situated along numerous water sources has made it an ideal crossroad throughout history.\nThe intersection of the north-south and east-west paths brought growth opportunities to the town along with manufacturing and a convergence of cultures. The railroad brought Southbury from a town of farmers to an industrial center bringing immigrants to settle here, mingling with historical families. Each culture has added a richness to the town's character.\nFrom the time the Natives arrived and the settlers walked into the valley, clues were left behind about how their early societies functioned and how individuals lived their lives. As we look around modern-day Southbury, we can still see pieces of the various stages of growth. Some have said that nothing interesting ever happened in Southbury, but if one looks closely, its secrets will be revealed through the remnants of our past.
