This study focusses upon the Old Norse version of AElfric's Old English homily De falsis diis - the most substantial of a family of Old Norse-Icelandic texts, of unclear provenance, but which derive in varying degrees from Old English originals. To throw fresh light upon the translation's origins, a range of other Old Norse and Old English texts are considered. While the known facts of AElfrician manuscript circulation and adaptation are hard to reconcile with an Icelandic origin, traces of later circulation in Norway and Iceland are explored. The study includes a parallel-text Old English-Old Norse edition of De falsis diis, with facing modern English translations, to aid detailed comparison.

L'Entrée d'Espagne is a fourteenth century Franco-Italian poem, probably composed by its unknown Paduan author at the early Visconti court, which defined a literary trend of the Renaissance; by transforming a typical epic matter - Charlemagne's conquest of Spain - into a chivalric poem, it successfully hybridized epic with classical sources, references to the Breton romances, and European conceptions (or misconceptions) of medieval Islam. This study traces the major influences upon this important work of art, including the backdrop of early fourteenth-century Northern Italian politics. It examines the gradual weakening of the figure of Charlemagne in the poem as a reflection, above all, of the diplomatic and military tensions between France and the early rulers of Milan.

L'Entree D'Espagne: Context and Authorship at the Origins of the Italian Chivalric Epic (Ns34)

This study establishes groupings for a range of vernacular confessional prayers from the tenth and eleventh centuries, thereby revealing not only key divergences but the even more striking parallels in their English phrases -- phrases doubtless familiar to their intended readers or reciters which would have helped them in confessing or meditating upon their sins. Each edited text is provided with notes and there is an extensive glossary. The manuscript context of each prayer is examined in detail to consider how far this throws any light on the expected usage. Where known, the Latin original that lies behind the texts is supplied, demonstrating how closely or freely the original translator (and perhaps others intervening in the texts here printed) followed the Latin.

The J.B. Treatise is a collection of lore and information from the later fifteenth century on a range of topics considered essential learning for anyone aspiring to the English gentry. It has hitherto been known principally by way of an eclectic medley of filler material in the printed Boke of St Albans (1486), but survives in numerous variant forms in twenty-two, mostly unrelated, manuscripts. The treatise’s foremost concerns are hawking and hunting, but it differs from other contemporary treatises on these sports by concentrating on terminology rather than praxis. Much of its information is presented in the form of lists of terms, suggesting that it served mainly as a lexical primer rather than a manual of practical instruction. 
This study – which includes four major variant texts, explanatory notes, a glossary and complete collations of the ‘J.B.’ lists of collective nouns and carving terms – is the first comprehensive survey of all known versions of the J.B. Treatise, whose contents will be of interest to English medievalists in a range of disciplines, including history, literature and linguistics. This second edition of the J.B. Treatise includes comprehensive updates to the introduction, notes, and glossary to account for new scholarship, including numerous emendations to the OED prompted by lexical evidence presented in the first edition (2003). It also incorporates a revised bibliography and references to new editions of medieval texts.

Medieval literature and art abounds in descriptions of grotesque torments (punitive in hell, redemptive in purgatory) being meted out to the unhappy dead.
