Design in Italy, edited by Silvana Annicchiarico, is a richly illustrated chronology of 100 objects, from the post war period up to the present, which have marked and transformed the Italian way of life and modern culture. Ranging from the early mass-produced objects of the 1940s and 50s, through the rigorous modernism of the 60s and 70s, up to the formal experimentation of the 80s and 90s, we glimpse the Vespa and the Lambretta motor scooters, the Valentine typewriter and the Grillo telephone, the Blow chair and the Tizio lamp. Each object is presented with a technical description, one or more color photos and a historical/critical outline illustrating its formal, functional, technological and social importance. The result is a vast and fascinating panoramic view of one of the most important cultural and economic sectors of contemporary Italian society. The Finnish architect Alvar Aalto (1898 - 1976), was one of the key exponents of Modernism and the International Style. He began his career in the 1920s with buildings in the Nordic Classical style, but was drawn to International Modernism by the end of the decade. Aalto’s Paimio Sanatorium (1929-1933) can be counted as a masterwork of the period in the global context. In the mid-1930s, Aalto broke away from the Modernist group known as CIAM to develop his own vocabulary of form in a more complex direction and he created the free-form approach to design for which his architecture became world famous. The best-known expressions of the free-form approach are the easy chair he designed for Paimio, the ‘Savoy’ vase and the Villa Mairea. Aalto’s rise to become a master of International Modernism stemmed from his humanitarian approach, which can best be seen in the scale of his buildings and in the way he used materials.

Barletta: Sea, Center and Periphery details the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture's studio to produce designs for key areas in Barletta. The creation of designs for the city provided the opportunity to deal with two delicate town-planning issues: first, how to operate within a historical center; and second, how to upgrade a dismantled industrial area, subject to restrictions imposed by the Service of Artistic and Architectural Heritage. The goal was to integrate the new with the old, by working to rehabilitate the surroundings totally, avoiding piecemeal fixes unresponsive to the total urban fabric.We appreciate the remarkable next to the mundane; the coherent as well as the irregular; the beauty of proportional relationships; grandeur and moderation; opulence and austerity; solidity, firmness and also delicateness; and especially the suitability of buildings to the very place from which these buildings emerge.
