Berwind, and Whitemarsh Hall, Trumbauer's masterpiece built for the Stotesburys outside of Philadelphia. The first-floor rooms were decorated by the London-based firm of White, Allom &amp; Company. Essentially unaltered since 1913, these rooms feature the family's art collection, including ancestral portraits by Thomas Sully and hunt scenes and landscapes on or near Ardrossan by Charles Morris Young. Christopher Long is Martin S. Kermacy Centennial Professor of Architecture at the University of Texas, Austin, where he first began lecturing in 1999. Shortly after receiving his Ph.D. in history, Long taught at the Central European University in Prague (1994–1995). His research centers on modern architectural history, with a particular emphasis on Central Europe between 1880 and the present. Long has lectured worldwide and written or contributed to over fifty publications, including his numerous studies of the architecture of Adolf Loos and his seminal books on Paul Frankl and Kem Weber (both published by Yale University Press). He has collaborated on several exhibitions, advising on

The nineteenth century was an incredibly vibrant period in Newport, Rhode Island’s, rich architectural history. Opulent private houses―or summer “cottages” as they were known―populated the seaside resort half a century before the rise of the European Revival behemoths of the late 1880s and 1890s. The luxury and splendor of many of these earlier homes often rivaled the sumptuousness of the later “Gilded Age” mansions. 
In the decades since 1835, when the first private house was built exclusively for seasonal use, scores of magnificent homes were commissioned by a burgeoning summer colony whose members were among America’s wealthiest and most prominent families, including the Schermerhorns, Lorillards, Goelets, and Joneses. They built their summer residences in neighborhoods known today as Kay-Catherine-Old Beach Road, Bellevue Avenue, Ochre Point, and Ocean Drive, commissioning local talents such as George Champlin Mason Sr., Seth C.
