Description:

This lavishly illustrated catalogue accompanied the exhibitions: "Van Gogh & Japan", Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, 23 March - 24 June 2018, previously at Hokkaidō Museum of Modern Art (Sapporo), Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, and National Museum of Art (Kyoto).
This paperback catalogue was available exclusively at Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam and is no longer in print and can considered a collectable item.
Van Gogh never went to Japan. He created his own image of the country thanks to the Japanese prints he eagerly collected and closely studied. The colourful and exotic images greatly inspired him. Van Gogh started to copy Japanese prints to better understand them. Doing so, he developed a 'Japanese eye' that would give his work a new direction. What was this Japanese way of looking? This is what the exhibition Van Gogh & Japan was about.

The list of essays included in the book:

  • "The beginning of the 'Japanese dream': Van Gogh's acquaintance with Japan" by Nienke Bakker
  • "In the light of Japan: Van Gogh's quest for happiness and a modern identity" by Louis van Tilborgh
  • "Van Gogh's Japan: Embracing an idea" by Cornelia Homburg
  • "After the dream: Van Gogh and Japan in his last months in Paris and Auvers-sur-Oise" by Tsukasa Kodera
  • "Van Gogh's Japanese prints: From dealer's stock to artist's collection" by Chris Uhlenbeck
  • "Chronology: Van Gogh and Japanese art" by Claire Guitton
