John Ermine is caught between two cultures, unable to assimilate fully into either. As a child, he was abandoned, found by the Crow Indian tribe and raised as one of their own. As an adolescent, “White Weasel” is taken to see Crooked-Bear, a white man who counsels the Crow elders. Under Crooked-Bear’s tutelage, White Weasel is schooled and rechristened John Ermine before being reintroduced into white society. He becomes a scout in the military and is infatuated with a white woman named Katherine Searles. But Ermine faces the inequalities of American society.
