In the summer of 1970, Lance Conway, star pitcher for his high school's baseball team, falls in love for the first time. The beautiful Laura Campbell, new to the small-town life of rural Louisiana, quickly falls for Lance, oblivious to his working-class background. Her father, however, proves a challenge. As vice-president of a company that contracts with the military, he is unimpressed by Lance's limited prospects as the son of a truck driver. Lance struggles to make a good impression as Robert Campbell quashes his attempts at conversation and grills about his plans after graduation. The day Lance leaves on a family vacation, something seems wrong at the Campbell home. When he returns, he is devastated to find the Campbells gone from town and their house sold. Over the years, Lance expands his business, making investments and rubbing shoulders with Texas millionaires until his enterprise becomes an empire. By the ago of twenty-one Lance himself has become a millionaire. With his unstoppable work ethic, he fills the void left by Laura's disappearance, rebuilds his pride and proves to himself that he deserves her love and her father's respect.
