Who Am I?

Have you ever asked the question "Who am I?" Many individuals will confront the issue of "Who Am I?" at some point during their lifetime. An individual without knowledge of his true identity will wander aimlessly through life. A person who is not sure of their true identity can be identified as someone being like a "ship without a sail." They do not know who they are, where they came from, or where they are going. Even if they knew where they were going, they would not know how to get there. Can you imagine being someone who has an aimless life? If you were asked to identify yourself you would probably do what I often do which is state your name - I am... But is your name really who you are? There are many descriptions we attach to our identity and our name is only one of them. Many people identify themselves with their jobs, relationships, titles, and even their social status. To answer the question "Who am I?" requires that we know our origin, our purpose, and our future. For only in knowing where we come from, why we are here and where we are going can we come to a proper conclusion regarding who we are. We cannot find our true identity apart from God. All identity apart from a relationship with God, our Creator, is false and incomplete. Therefore, as we struggle with the question "Who am I?" we must realize that our identity cannot be discovered within ourselves or the world around us. Our purpose and identity are found in God. Whenever a person is faced with an identity crisis, it is God who is the¬¬¬ remedy. He is the only remedy¬; once we arrive at this realization, we no longer need to wander around in the wilderness of life or like a "ship without a sail."
