More than a "survey," Everett's treatment of the interrelationships among the United States, South America, England and Europe concerns long-range economic forecasts. It presents a coherent vision of a world system in which the doctrine of progress is fundamental--progress fueled by colonization, equitable distribution of property (especially land), population increase and increase in the means of subsistence.
