He is the author of the influential book Basic Marketing. A Managerial Approach (now in its 17th edition with co-authors William D. Perreault, Jr. and Joseph P. Cannon). Professor E. Jerome McCarthy, in 1960, reduced the Marketing Mix concept to 4 elements: product, price, place and promotion. He received his PhD from the University of Minnesota in 1958.
