In 1990 archaeologist Charles K. Williams II began seriously to acquire paintings, sculptures, watercolors, and drawings by modern American artists, after about ten years of collecting 19th- and 20th-century American and European prints. Williams amassed an important collection that includes examples by most of the major American artists and movements of the early 20th century. 
This fully illustrated catalogue features entries on more than one hundred significant works by artists including Stieglitz Circle painters Georgia O’Keeffe, John Marin, Marsden Hartley, and Arthur Dove; Precisionists Charles Demuth, Ralston Crawford, George Ault, and Charles Sheeler; and Philadelphia modernists Arthur B. Carles, Hugh Henry Breckenridge, and Earl Horter. Sculptures by Elie Nadelman, John Storrs, Alberto Giacometti, and Louise Nevelson are included. Of special note is Thomas Hart Benton’s painting The Apple of Discord and a rare landscape drawing by American Regionalist Grant Wood.

Since the late 1960s, William H. Helfand has donated more than 1,000 posters, prints, and ephemera to the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Ars Medica Collection, the world's only collection of medical prints housed in an art museum. This fascinating volume presents some 50 of the nearly 200 posters in the renowned Helfand Collection, and includes the work of prominent artists such as Jules Chéret and Leonetto Cappiello. Chéret's large, colorful lithographs elevated the commercial placard to the rank of art, while Cappiello's arresting figures revolutionized 20th-century poster design. Additional examples demonstrate the wide range of compositions produced by unidentified artists working in Europe and the United States between the late 19th and 20th centuries. Dating from the mid-19th to the late 20th century, these posters—sometimes strange or startling but most often amusing—address a wide range of topics, including hygiene, medical conferences, and spurious miracle cures.

Richard Pousette-Dart (1916–1992) is best known as an American painter of mid-20th-century Abstract Expressionism, although his work was distinct for its spiritual content and his elaborate layering of materials. His works on paper are remarkable for their varied use of materials and techniques, and reflect the artist’s shift from figurative representation to semi-abstract forms emerging out of free calligraphic drawing, to a form of pointillism, and a return to spontaneous drawing. Pousette-Dart’s later works include evocative graphite drawings touched with white paint, bold black and white paintings, hand-colored etchings, and colorful acrylics on handmade paper. The authors employ close stylistic and technical analysis to trace for the first time the narrative of Pousette-Dart’s career as a draftsman. Generously illustrated with nearly 200 color images, this revelatory publication presents an unprecedented examination of the artist’s works on paper, focused on his dynamic experimentation with media and styles over nearly seven decades.

With an initial grant in 1979, the Hunt Manufacturing Co. began a collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Art containing adventurous and innovative works on paper by emerging artists. This catalogue marks the second installment of works acquired by the Museum since 1988, when the Museum first exhibited printmaking, drawing, and photography from the collection. Featured in this volume are acquisitions that stretch the established boundaries of composition or imagery, either through the use of centuries-old techniques or new technologies of the camera and the computer.
