Year - 2012 Scale - 1/2" to the Mile Topo Lines - No Plastic Region 2 Arapaho National Forest is a U.S. National Forest located in the U.S. state of Colorado. The facility is managed jointly with the Roosevelt National Forest and the Pawnee National Grassland from the United States Forest Service office in Fort Collins, Colorado. The combined facility of 1.5 million acres (6,000 km²) is denoted as ARP by the Forest Service. The forest is located in the Rocky Mountains, straddling the continental divide in the Front Range west of Denver. It is was established on July 1, 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt and named for the Arapaho tribe of Native Americans who previously inhabited the Colorado Eastern Plains. The forest includes part of the high Rockies and river valleys in the upper watershed of the Colorado River and South Platte River.\nThe Roosevelt National Forest was named in honor of Theodore Roosevelt, the person most responsible for creating the National Forest System as we know it today. Originally part of Medicine Bow Forest Reserve established in 1897, this public land became the Colorado National Forest in 1910. President Herbert Hoover renamed it Roosevelt National Forest in 1932. Today, the Roosevelt is administered jointly as part of the 1.3-million acre Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests. Topography on the Roosevelt National Forest varies from rolling foothills to snow covered peaks, to deep scenic canyons.

Visitors can choose from a wide range of activities, including exploring beautiful high mountain lakes, the fascinating geology of the Sierras, or the rugged Granite Chief Wilderness. The 1,500 to 9,400 foot elevation range of the Tahoe provides a wide variety of year-round recreational activities. There are also wonderful opportunities for discovering the rich history of the area. As long as 4,000 years ago, the ancestors of the Washoe, Maidu, and Nisenan people lived in the area that is now the Tahoe National Forest. Though their permanent homes were generally at lower elevations outside the Forest boundary, they ranged widely throughout the forest from spring to fall, hunting game and gathering acorns, berries, seeds, and other foods and natural materials.

Its 567,000 acres are located in Orange, Riverside, and San Diego Counties, at elevations ranging from 460 to 6,271 feet. A warm, dry Mediterranean climate prevails over the Cleveland National Forest--hot in the summer, mild in the winter. Most of the forest vegetation is chaparral, predominantly coastal sage, chamise, manzanita, and ceanothus.

Forty-seven percent of the Flathead's 2.4 million acres is congressionally designated wilderness. Getting into this wild country is relatively easy, with nearly 2,100 miles of foot and horse trails across the Flathead National Forest. Visitors can also enjoy the 219 miles of Wild and Scenic Rivers in the Forest. These federally protected waterways include the North, Middle, and South Forks of the Flathead River. Recreation opportunities abound in any season here. Boaters enjoy the Hungry Horse Reservoir, and mountain bikers cycle the Forest's recreation trails. Snowmobilers zip over mountainous trails from Marias Pass to the Canyon Creek drainage leading to the summit of Big Mountain.
