Eliezer Ben-Yehuda (1858-1922), a Russian Jew, was the leader of the movement to revive the Hebrew language - the only attempt we know of that succeeded in restoring an archaic language to use in everyday speech. This memoir is an account of his life until 1882, a year after he settled in Jerusalem. It contains a description of his early life in the Jewish Pale of Settlement, which shows him moving away from traditional Jewish religious beliefs toward the Hebrew enlightenment and then into revolutionary socialism. The last part of the book gives a glimpse of life in the Jewish quarter of Jerusalem's Old City in the early 1880s.But most interesting, perhaps, is Ben-Yehuda's account of his conversion to Jewish nationalism while he was still at school. This took place in 1877, four years before the pogroms and nearly twenty years before Theodor Herzl, the founder of Zionism, appeared on the scene. The reasons for the change had nothing to do with anti-Semitism. Ben-Yehuda was one of very few Jews who became "Zionists" (in his case, two decades before the word was invented) prior to 1881, and he is the only one who left a memoir of the process that led him to his belief. In every other case there is an element - usually very large - of guesswork in trying to explain why the conversion happened. Ben-Yehuda's is a fascinating account of that intellectual process.

Since 1995 five centres in Europe (Cambridge, Firenze, Leuven, Oxford, and Roma) have been engaged in a joint research project, Semantics of Ancient Hebrew Database. The project aims at building an ongoing database which consists of a critical and exhaustive assessment of lexico-semantic studies on the vocabulary of Ancient Hebrew published since the end of the Second World War. The corpus includes not only Biblical Hebrew, but also epigraphic materials, Ben Sira, and Hebrew documents from the Judean Desert. Each centre has been working on lexemes belonging to a particular field. The outline grammar should not take up more than ten class hours. The passages, a total of nine, are both in prose and verse. Each passage is annotated with constant references to appropriate sections of the outline grammar. This annotation goes far beyond a mere parsing of forms and glossing. The author wishes to believe that he has offered here and there some original ideas. A number of paradigms are attached and several simple exercises with keys. The book concludes with a simple glossary.

A Biblical Hebrew Reader: With an Outline Grammar (English and Hebrew Edition)

A fifth-sixth century clergyman-cum-theologian, Jacob of Serugh (also spelled Sarug), was an extremely prolific writer. Not counting a number of works in prose he is said to have written nearly 800 homilies, mostly on themes of theological import or biblical stories and personalities. These homilies are composed in metre: each line has twelve vowels.   So far less than 150 such homilies have been edited and/or translated. Hexaemeron is an exposition of the first six days of the universe. Jacob dedicated an extra homily to the sabbath, making a total of seven homilies. This genre was known earlier in Greek. Jacob's is the first of the kind in Syriac.   Currently the only complete text of Jacob's Hexaemeron is available in an edition by Bedjan (1905-10), but with no translation. This is the first time that this highly interesting work is made available in its entirety, accompanied by an English translation. The editor studies six complete manuscripts and one containing only two homilies. None of these seven manuscrips was available to Bedjan, and one of them is presumably as old as the principal manuscript used by Bedjan.
