Canadian-born Agnes Martin was one of the pre-eminent painters of the second half of the twentieth century, whose work has had a significant influence both on artists of her own time and for subsequent generations. A contemporary of the abstract expressionists though often identified with minimalism, Martin was of the few woman artists who came to prominence in the predominately masculine art world of the late 1950s and 1960s, and became a particularly important role model for younger women artists. This groundbreaking survey provides an overview of Martin's career, from lesser-known early experimental works through her striped and grided grey paintings and use of colour in various formats, to a group of her final works that reintroduce bold forms. A selection of drawings and watercolours is also included. With essays by leading scholars that give a context for Martin's work - her life, relationship with other artists, the influence of South- Asian philosophy - alongside focused shorter pieces on particular paintings, the book will appeal to art students, academics and all those interested in abstract art. At the end of the twentieth century ordinary people have little or no understanding of how the world we live in functions, how the food we eat is grown or how the objects we use are manufactured. For The Two-Minute Airplane Factory Burden has designed a factory-like assembly line which will construct model aeroplanes from paper, plastic and balsa-wood parts. The process, which is all on view, culminates in the launch of the planes, which fly up and circle round before descending to land on the gallery floor, to be collected and sold to visitors. Burden lays bare the principles of mass production in a way that is entertaining, ingenious and provocative.

Chris Burden: When Robots Ruled the Air

Born in 1911, Louise Bourgeois began her career as a painter but switched to sculpture after her first solo exhibition in 1945. Her drawings, paintings, sculptures, and prints are almost obsessively autobiographical, depicting her concern with human isolation and with issues of gender. She has frequently stated that her personal style has evolved from her emotions. This book includes texts about the artist and her work, particularly focusing on four giant sculptures being prepared for the Unilever Series in the huge turbine hall at the heart of Tate Modern. There are also extracts from a lively interview recently conducted with the artist in her New York studio.

From May to October 2003 two enormous inflatable sculptures will loom above visitors to Tate Modern and those strolling along the riverbank. The first, Blockhead, revisits one of McCarthy's trademark characters, a mutant cartoon character with a Pinocchio nose emerging from its cuboid head. At 35 meters, it towers as high as the fourth level of Tate Modern. The second sculpture is named Daddies Bighead. This 16-meter high figure has a body constructed from a giant replica of a ketchup bottle. McCarthy has frequently used ketchup in his performances and installations as a stand-in for blood and other bodily excretions. Much of his work has courted controversy, dealing as it does with iconic imagery taken from childhood and popular culture combined with sexually charged and transgressive elements. McCarthy has exhibited widely across the United States, Europe and Japan, and has undertaken collaborations with artists including Mike Kelly and Jason Rhoades.
