William Halsey (1915-1999) lived in Charleston, South Carolina, for most of his life. Unlike most resident artists who preceded him and many who followed, Halsey did not paint picturesque scenes of his native city. Halsey was a modernist in a city known for its traditional beauty and romance. In this visual arts irony, he found his inspiration. This catalog celebrates his life and legacy. Upon graduation from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Halsey and his wife, artist Corrie McCallum, lived in Mexico and Savannah before their permanent move to Charleston. Halsey forged a vital connection between South Carolina and the larger world of modern art. His abstract paintings, collages, sculptures, and assemblages reflected the city's colors, textures, and geometry. He literally incorporated Charleston into his work through his use of found, everyday objects. Through his work as an art teacher in Charleston, his twenty-year career at the College of Charleston, and his rigorous exhibition schedule, Halsey promoted contemporary advanced art throughout the South. Today, he is widely revered as one of the most important artists in South Carolina's history.

In 2003 Charleston artist Corrie McCallum (1914-2009) was honored with the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Governor's Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts, South Carolina's highest public honor for those who have contributed to the cultural enrichment of the state. As demonstrated in this lovely catalog, McCallum's variety and quality of work attests to her significant artistic achievements as a painter and printmaker. A author, educator, wife, and mother, McCallum was multitasking long before it was fashionable. Her dedication to her husband, Charleston artist William Halsey, and to their children was a commitment that often compromised a full appreciation of her own art during her sixty-year marriage. In Corrie McCallum: Take Note, her work comes alive with images that exemplify her understated range of ability and talents. Ranging from oil on canvas to color woodblock to lithograph to casein to ink, she depicts the enthusiasm and vibrancy found in her everyday surroundings.

A veteran actor, comedian, author, and recording artist, Martin Mull is also an accomplished visual artist. To paint in hindsight is to paint with clarity, or as Mull sees it, with "second sight." Showcasing some of Mull's wide range of abstract paintings and watercolors, Martin Mull 20/20 presents his work with a conscious integrity and an unfettered glimpse into a stark reality. Each image carefully depicts the simple vividness with which Mull sees the world. He expertly contrasts dull tones with bright resonances of color, displaying his ability to look beyond the romantic nostalgia of memories and re-create the grit of actuality. The individual forces of creative writing and art combine in this anniversary edition of the Emrys Journal, which also features the work of abstract painter Katherine Porter alongside a sampling of stellar poetry and prose from the journal's first twenty-four editions. Born in Iowa, Porter is a painter who has worked is such disparate locations as Paris, France, and coastal Maine, Montreal, and Madison, Wisconsin. Although her preferred medium is oil on canvas, she has produced work in collage, gouche on paper, and embroidery. She has been a visiting artist at such schools as Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, Dartmouth College, and Columbia and Stanford Universities. The introduction by poet William Corbett provides a personal context and critical insight into Porter's recent work. The volume presents works by twelve authors that were selected as exemplary of the journal's past contributors in contemporary fiction and poetry as well. Representing the third generation of one of America’s most renowned families of artists, James Browning Wyeth (born 1946) began pursuing his career as an artist at the age of eleven, under the tutelage of his aunt, Carolyn Wyeth. Ambitious and talented, Jamie Wyeth enjoyed early success painting the residents and landscapes of his hometown, Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. He later worked in New York City, where he befriended and painted arts celebrities Andy Warhol, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rudolf Nureyev, and Lincoln Kirstein. Featuring twenty-one of Wyeth's most recent paintings, many of which have never been seen publicly before, Jamie Wyeth: Our Own Rabelais explores the evolution of Wyeth’s technique and imagination. Half of the 50 works date from the 1990s, while the others span the artist's career and include studies for some of his oil paintings. All the work comes from the collection of a single, unnamed individual, and many of the pieces have not been previously published. An introductory essay by Greenville curator Severens provides brief comments on each watercolor, but the concluding essay by psychologist Ken Wilber is an idiosyncratic summary of recent trends in art and literary criticism that seems out of place.
