<p>Soon after birth, tiger cubs are instinctively drawn to wrestling. Eventually their play transforms into real skills of potentially lethal efficiency. Humans have done the same. In this anthology, you will find unique combative techniques found in some cultures as well as some techniques that are universal. Allen Pittman gives a portrayal of Dr. Tim Geoghegan’s particular blend of Eastern and Western wrestling, and his formidable arsenal for grappling and throwing. In anther chapter, Pittman focuses on the shoulder throw. The technical variations seem endless for this valued movement. Steve Scott illustrates the cross-body armlock according to skills he hopes will give readers a better understanding and mastery of this armlock. His following chapter shows a rare Russian technique. Known as the Kharbarelli Pick-up, it is a good example of how different cultures and their unique grappling traditions have been adopted outside their original location. The chapter on the carotid choke is presented from the perspectives of a martial arts instructor and that of a physician. The application, effects, and ramifications of drug usage and mental state are discussed in detail. Tim Cartmell explains the key concepts of “sticking and following” as they apply to throwing methods found in Chinese xingyi, taiji and bagua. The concepts are explained and illustrated with examples of sample techniques. David Allen’s writes on the Mongolian Nadaam Festival. Athletes from all over the country assemble to compete in horse racing, archery, and wrestling. Mongolian wrestling is probably the least watched martial art in the world. The author’s photo exposé brings the festival to us. The chapter by Burdick, Wolske and Daneshagar gives us a rare view into the Persian grappling tradition. Iran’s national sport is the strength training system found in the “house of strength,” where bodybuilders and wrestlers are steeped in both Zarathrushran and Islamic traditions. The following chapter by Zhang Yun is on the throwing art of Shuai Jiao. It includes: history and development, analysis of fighting principles, details of hand and footwork, body movement, training methods, training equipment, relationship with other Chinese styles, and demonstrations of applications. The final article focuses on sumo with some parallels being drawn between sumo and mixed martial arts. Techniques and tactics are presented so readers might add some of these sumo moves to their own martial arts repertoire.</p>

Many Indo-Malay martial arts are kept private, taught in secluded areas away from the public. These are arts of the older tradition, developed when combative knowledge was valued for its use in protecting the sanctity of life. This two-volume anthology brings together a great collection of writings by authors who dive into the deepest realms of Indo-Malay combatives. They offer readers a rare viewing of martial traditions that is usually hidden behind social shrouds of secrecy and a clannish quest to preserve individual tradition. A special presentation in this second volume are the writings of Dr. Kirstin Pauka forming three chapters on silat (silk) of West Sumatra. The lead chapter discusses silk history, styles, training methods, and its use in dance. In chapter 2, Dr. Pauka shows that the martial arts constitute the core of the movement repertoire of the Randai folk theatre. Her third piece reports on an extended silk artist-in-residence program in the Asian Theatre program at the University of Hawai'i. The next three chapters contains some academic coverage of kuntao-silat in the Indo-Malay traditions, garnished with technical sections illustrating the martial aspects of the arts. Mark Wiley details Silat Seni Gayong’s ethical foundation for self-defense and nine techniqes illustrating the art with the help of Master Shiekh Shamsuddin. My own chapter offers a glimpse of how cultural streams from India and China contributed over centuries to native Indonesian fighting arts to form hybrid systems. Examples were derived from personal observations of practitioners in the Willem Reeders lineage. The research shows the original intent and practices of any highly efficient combative art. Chris Parker’s insightful chapter discusses applications of specific movements, the rhythm that can be achieved when employing them, and the space they fill as being of crucial importance for defense. Pencak silat postures form the focus of this study. All who are serious about the history and practice of Indo-Malay fighting arts will enjoy this special anthology, volumes one and two. We are very fortunate to assemble the works of these highly qualified authors. We hope reading will provide information you seek. Although the availability of studying under a true silat mater is nearly impossible, the chapters here will certainly add direction and inspiration for practitioners.

The chapters in this anthology present an encompassing perspective of how some Chinese martial art styles—and most significantly taijiquan—developed and evolved along with deep rooted traditions of spirituality and the quest for health and longevity. Much in this volume deals with Daoist theories and practices, particularly its influences ranging from human energetics and other physical exercises, to practical combative arts. Holcombe, Willmont, and Breslow's well-researched chapters dive deeply into the philosophical, spiritual, and physical traditions associated with Daoism. The search for immortality is shown to be of prime importance since it gave impetus to the belief that human beings can live healthier, longer, and happier lives. My own chapter presents a way of directly discovering taijiquan's philosophical principles through experiential involvement in the art itself. Henning’s chapter gives an example in this tradition in the life of Ge Hong (284-363 CE). Known for his Daoist alchemical pursuits, Ge was also a military officer who provides valuable insights into Chinese martial arts practices. Dr. Wile explores the ways in which martial arts have been exposed to cultural construction and deconstruction. A Daoist connection has figured in political ideology, national identity, and commercial interest during the past 400 years of Chinese history. The text focuses on taichiquan as an important site of constructing Chinese-ness. From the early 20th century, the Chinese government often looked at Daoism as a form of superstition, and allowed temples to fall into disrepair. In the 21st century, as Hawthorne shows, there is a quest to rescue historic Daoist sites and study the tradition. In the final chapter, Greg Brodsky applies a five-element yoga model to the practice of taijiquan as a "quality assurance test." It offers opportunities for deepening, enriching, and enjoying taiga practice. In all, the chapters here offer insights for understanding how Chinese martial traditions...particularly taijiquan...developed and evolved within the framework of culture. The word taiji takes on different meanings according to time and place. This also resolves the ongoing arguments regarding taijiquan as a practical combat art verses a health regimen. As a proverb points out: "From the standpoint of the sun, day and night have no meaning."

This anthology offers not only a handy historical overview of taijiquan history, but most chapters focus on actual practice. Guidance is provided through Carol Derrickson's discussion on taijiquan classic writings as well as from other highly experienced instructors in their own chapters. Dr. Linda Lehrhaupt's chapter inspires one to practice by explaining how mental changes occur in a student during initial weeks of classes. Although most taiji classes are offered by individuals in their own schools, a number of classes are also offered in academic settings. Andrew Peck gives a fine example of how taiji is taught in a university setting. Other authors present subtle aspects of practice—be it eye movement, circles that exist even in movements that appear to be linear, benefits derived from solo and group practice, or the too often elusive element of relaxation. All these chapters will prove valuable to anyone wishing to improve their quality of practice and thus to reap more health benefits taiji has to offer. The same embodied principles can be utilized in martial applications, if one chooses. Peter Lim wrote two chapters. In one he details general taiji principles that are put into the practice, while in the other chapter he looks specifically at how the principles can be applied in combat. His chapters provide a solid foundation for better understanding tuishou, the two-person push-hands practice that Herman Kaus and Hal Mosher (with the help of Allen Pittman) discuss. Greg Wolfson (with the help of Scott Rodell) writes about push-hands and sanshou—a high-level two-person practice of combative training. Russ Mason's short but pertinent chapter samples two favorite techniques: wardoff and diagonal flying. The chapters by Donald Mainfort and Joel Stein are relatively unique in that they look at the variety of taiji forms—contrasting the original Chen Style with the Yang Style, and the large and medium frames—helping us better understand how and why routines differ, and which may be better suited for particular individuals. As a result, we can also see why movements from different styles can blend into anyone’s practice. Comprised of articles previously published in the Journal of Asian Martial Arts—we are highly optimistic that you will find something on each page of this anthology to be of great use in your understanding and practice.

Or is it a martially-inspired art, practice only for health or for theatrical performance? — A number of chapters provide fine details for categorizing the variety of what we commonly refer to as "martial arts." While demonstrating the complexity of the martial arts as a field of study, the authors provide insights and methods that actually clarity and facilitate any discussion of this fascinating subject. Other chapters focus on the martial arts as living culture. We learn about the physical side of these arts just as we learn about other aspects of culture, except that often the martial arts being taught are from Asia. It is extremely important to understand just how a foreign art enters and adapts to another culture minus much of its associated history and culture. The social implications are enormous as shown in some of the chapters. Anyone who practices an Asian martial art may be exposed to related cultural aspects, such as Oriental philosophy and social customs. These can have an effect on the practitioner’s character. When elements of different cultures are absorbed, their embodiment can be seen in the individual’s daily actions. The question of violence is paramount in this potentially activity. With proper instruction, chances are better for a practitioner to experience a self-transformation that improves character, nurturing qualities such as patience and respect. This anthology’s table of contents hints the in-depth material that fills nearly 300 pages. This publication is for those who take researching martial traditions very seriously.</p>
