Il Gruppo Corazzato "M" "Leonessa" della G.N.R. costitu&#65533; un unicum tra le Forze Armate della Repubblica Sociale Italiana. Infatti, fu il pi&#65533; consistente e operativo dei pochi reparti dotati di mezzi corazzati, anche di circostanza, operando soprattutto nella lotta antipartigiana. Ma il "Leonessa" discendeva direttamente dall'omonimo Gruppo Carri che, prima dell'Armistizio, faceva parte della 1a Divisione Corazzata "M" della M.V.S.N., costituita da personale fedele al Duce, rinominata dopo il 25 luglio 136a Divisione Corazzata "Centauro II". Dopo la resa italiana, tutto il materiale della Divisione fu incamerato dai tedeschi, inclusi i Panzer III, i Panzer IV e gli Stug.III del "Leonessa". Ma parte degli effettivi della Divisione rifiutarono di combattere contro gli ex-alleati e, rimesse le "M" rosse e la camicia nera si misero in cerca di armi e carri armati nelle caserme italiane ormai vuote, per continuare la guerra accanto ai tedeschi.

Costituitasi la Repubblica Sociale nel Nord Italia e la struttura dell'Esercito Nazionale, con l'emanazione dei bandi di arruolamento, il forte afflusso dei volontari e la scelta dei militari internati di rientrare in servizio nel nuovo Esercito, si dette l'avvio alla costituzione delle Forze Armate della R.S.I. nelle quali svolsero un ruolo primario gli Alpini, nonostante le difficoltà per l'approvvigionamento dei materiali militari.

The Armored Group "M" "Leonessa" of G.N.R. constituted a unicum among the Armed Forces of the Italian Social Republic. In fact, it was the most consistent and operational of the few units equipped with armored vehicles, operating above all in the anti-partisan struggle. But the "Leonessa" descended directly from the homonymous Tanks Group which, before the Armistice, was part of the 1st Armored Division "M" of the MVSN, consisting of personnel loyal to the Duce, renamed after July 25th 136th Armored Division "Centaur 2nd". After the Italian surrender, all the material of the Division was confiscated by the Germans, including the Panzer III, the Panzer IV and the Stug.III of the "Lioness". But part of the Division's staff refused to fight against the former allies and, putting the red "M's" and the black shirt back in search of weapons and tanks in the now empty Italian barracks, to continue the war alongside the Germans.

Lo sbando generale causato dall'Armistizio dell'8 settembre ebbe ripercussioni immediate anche sui reparti di Bersaglieri, sia presenti nella Penisola, sia all'Estero. I Bersaglieri però furono tra i primi a riorganizzarsi ed a riprendere le armi, sia al Sud, dove a fine settembre 1943 il LI Battaglione Bersaglieri d'istruzione Allievi Ufficiali di Complemento fu inserito nel Primo Raggruppamento Motorizzato, sia al Nord, dove in breve tempo si costituirono il Battaglione Bersaglieri "Mussolini", il Reggimento Bersaglieri "Luciano Manara" ed il 3° Reggimento Volontari.

The general disarray caused by the Armistice on 8th September 1943 had immediate repercussions on the Bersaglieri units, both present in the Peninsula and abroad. The Bersaglieri, however, were among the first to reorganize and take up arms again, both in the South, where at the end of September 1943 the LI Battalion of Bersaglieri was included in the First Motorized Grouping, both in the North, where in a short time the Bersaglieri Battalion "Mussolini", the Bersaglieri Regiment "Luciano Manara" and the 3rd Volunteer Regiment were formed.

The goal we have set ourselves with this series of four volumes, written in four hands, is to give an overall picture of the Divisions formed by the Army of the R.S.I. to the departments used in the fight against the partisans by the Republican National Army, starting from the last months of 1943, offering a purely military point of view, free from judgments of any kind.The purpose of “continuing the war” had always been present since the beginning of autumn 1943 in the military authorities of the Social Republic. During talks between three Mussolini and Hitler it was agreed to form a new fascist army, which, in the intentions of the Fuhrer, was to be made up of an army of 10/15 divisions. In reality, only 4 were planned and formed by the Republican National Army: 1st Bersaglieri Division “Italy“, 2nd Grenadiers Division “Littorio“, 3rd Marine Division “San Marco“, 4th Alpine Division “Monterosa“.This first volume is dedicated to the Division “Italy”, which operated on the southern front in Garfagnana, against the Allies, until the end of the conflict.

Il Regno d'Italia vantava gi&#65533; dal 1912 il possedimento delle Isole del Dodecaneso e dal 1926 il protettorato sull'Albania e, con questi presupposti, dopo l'occupazione del Regno di Albania del 1939 e lo scoppio della Seconda Guerra Mondiale l'anno successivo, Mussolini concentr&#65533; i suoi sforzi contro la Grecia, iniziando nell'ottobre 1940 una disastrosa campagna militare, che costrinse il Reich tedesco ad un massiccio intervento a sostegno delle Forze Armate Italiane nei Balcani. La debolezza militare italiana trasform&#65533; cos&#65533; quella che poteva considerarsi per l'Italia una guerra "parallela" per assicurarsi il controllo di Albania, Grecia e Jugoslavia, in una guerra subordinata alla Germania. In questo volume si prende in analisi la storia delle unit&#65533; corazzate impegnate nei Balcani dal Regio Esercito e, dopo l'8 settembre 1943, dai reparti della Repubblica Sociale, dalle unit&#65533; tedesche, croate, slovene e dei partigiani, che dopo l'Armistizio poterono fare confluire nelle loro fila larga parte dei mezzi corazzati italiani abbandonati.

The Kingdom of Italy had already possessed the Dodecanese Islands since 1912 and it had the protectorate over Albania since 1926 and, with these assumptions, after the occupation of the Kingdom of Albania in 1939 and the outbreak of the Second World War the following year, Mussolini concentrated his efforts against Greece, starting in October 1940 a disastrous military campaign, which forced the German Reich to a massive intervention in support of the Italian Armed Forces in the Balkans. The Italian military weakness thus transformed what could be considered for Italy a "parallel" war to secure control of Albania, Greece and Yugoslavia, in a war subordinate to Germany.This volume analyzes the history of the armored units engaged in the Balkans by the Royal Army and, after 8 September 1943, by the units of the Italian Social Republic, by the German, Croatian, Slovenian and partisan units, which after the Armistice recovered a large part of the abandoned armored vehicles of Italian Army.

With the proclamation of the Armistice, the whole territory that included Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the Provinces of Ljubljana and Istria, considered of vital importance for the communication lines and for the supply of the German Army in Italy, was absorbed by the Reich, under the jurisdictional form of the so-called Zone of Operations of the Adriatic Coast (O.Z.A.K.). The government of the R.S.I. attempted to restore its authority in the O.Z.A.K. even in the military field, but German interference was always fierce. The reconstituted Legions of the M.V.S.N. were prevented to join the G.N.R. and the Germans imposed on these units the denomination of Territorial Defense Militia (Milizia Difesa Territoriale M.D.T.), formally part of the G.N.R., but autonomous in the reality. The M.D.T. was configured as a “Landschutz”, that is a defense unit of the territory. In parallel, the Prefect Coceani and the Podestà Pagnini promoted the establishment of a self-defense unit, the Civic Guard, in Trieste, an example followed in other cities in the region.
