At over 500,000 items, the Pauling Papers stand as among the largest personal archives in the world. The Paulings left an indelible mark on the twentieth century. Dr. Linus Pauling (1901-1994), the century's pre-eminent chemist, attained scientific renown through his pioneering contributions to structural chemistry, molecular biology and nutrition. In tandem with Ava Helen Pauling (1903-1981), his wife of fifty-eight years, Linus Pauling was likewise among the Cold War era's greatest agitators for peace and civil liberties. He remains history's only recipient of two unshared Nobel prizes - the first for his landmark research on the nature of the chemical bond (1954) and the second for his tireless activism in opposition to above-ground nuclear testing (1962).
