Stylist, designer, photographer, and decorator: Maurice Renoma is celebrated in this 50th-anniversary retrospective of a multifaceted career. As a fashion designer, Renoma (b. 1940) was a pioneer of France’s own pop style, known as yé-yé. He revolutionized 1960s fashion and went on to revolutionize photography. The Bitter Years was the title of a seminal exhibition held in 1962 at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, curated by Edward Steichen, and 2012 marks its fiftieth anniversary. The show featured 209 images by photographers who worked under the aegis of the U.S. Farm Security Administration (FSA) in 1935–41, as part of Roosevelt’s New Deal. The FSA, set up to combat rural poverty during the Great Depression, included an ambitious photography project that launched many photographic careers, most notably those of Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange. The exhibition featured their work as well as that of ten other FSA photographers, including Ben Shahn, Carl Mydans and Arthur Rothstein. Their images are among the most remarkable in documentary photography--testimonies of a people in crisis, hit by the full force of economic turmoil and the effects of drought and dust storms. This volume includes all the photographs in the original show, in a structure and sequence that reflect those devised by Steichen for the exhibition. The Bitter Years was the last exhibition curated by Steichen as Director of the Department of Photography at MoMA, in which role he had won international acclaim for his 1955 The Family of Man exhibition. Essays by Jean Back, Gabriel Bauret, Ariane Pollet, Miles Orvell and Antoinette Lorang discuss the FSA, its place in the history of twentieth-century photography and the continuing role of its archive, and Steichen and the origins, impact and legacy of the exhibition. The Bitter Years celebrates some of the most iconic photographs of the twentieth century, and--since no proper catalogue was produced at the time--provides a whole new insight into Steichen’s impact on the history of documentary photography.

The Hôtel de la Marine, an exemplary monument on Paris's Place de la Concorde, is a superb architectural achievement constructed in the eighteenth century by Ange-Jacques Gabriel, the official architect of King Louis XV. The institution it housed was charged with choosing, purchasing, and maintaining all of the king's furniture--from beds to the simplest chair--and the crown's treasures were stored here until 1789, after which it became the site of the Ministry of the Navy for more than two hundred years. &nbsp; An extensive four-year restoration was completed in 2021; the building reopened to the public and features a museum, conserved apartments that highlight the tastes of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, an exhibition hall, a bookshop, and three restaurants. Alexey Brodovitch (1898-1971) is a legend among graphic designers. A Russian who fled the Bolshevik Revolution and eventually settled in Paris and then New York, Brodovitch was one of the pioneers of graphic design in the twentieth century. He was the art director of Harper's Bazaar for two decades (1934-58); designed and produced several exquisite and highly collectable books with collaborators such as Richard Avedon and Andre Kertesz; was a talented photographer himself; and, through an informal class called the Design Lab in New York, trained a younger generation of photographers and designers who went on to become famous artists and art directors in their own right. This book is a comprehensive monograph on Brodovitch's life and work, drawing from interviews with a wide range of colleagues and collaborators, and never-before-published archival material to offer an analysis and appreciation of Brodovitch's unique and lasting contribution to the visual arts.
