The Appalachian Trail was conceived 79 years ago as a way for individuals, by their own unaided efforts, to explore the nature of the major mountain environments of the East and retreat for a while from daily industrialized life.  The Appalachian Long Distance Hikers Association's Apalachian Trail Thru-hikers' Companion represents a collaboration between the Appalachian Trail Conference, responsible for overseeing management of what is now a national scenic trail, and volunteers from the only organized user's group-hundreds of men and women who have hiked not only the Appalachian Trail in a single season but also many other U.S. long-distance trails.  All that combined, up-to-the-minute knowledge of "the A.T."- from Trail-maintainers and current hikers-goes into the Companion each winter, when it is updated by scores of volunteers.  The Companion provides enough basic information on hiker-oriented services near the trail to enable the adventure of walking on the A.T. to be your adventure, not someone else's hike-by-the-numbers.

The "Companion" is an annual collaboration of volunteers from the Appalachian Long Distance Hikers Association (ALDHA)--past thru-hikers--and the Appalachian Trail Conference's trail managers, staff and volunteers. It's a guide to hiker-oriented services in towns along the Appalachian Trail and important information (water locations, for example) about shelters and other spots along the footpath itself. Included are basic information for getting to the two termini of the trail, a post-office list, special sections on mammal tracks and bird calls, and toll-free numbers for equipment manufacturers. Appalachian Trail Thru-hikers' Companion--2004

Thru-hikers--those who attempt to hike all 2,175 miles of the Appalachian Trail between Georgia and Maine in a single journey--have special needs for information on services near the trail essential to their adventure of a lifetime. Veterans of this adventure from the Appalachian Long Distance Hikers Association volunteer each year to check on changes in towns (motels, post offices, restaurants, laundromats, etc.) and work with the trail's managers at the Appalachian Trail Conference to note changes along the footpath itself. 
The result is the Companion, all a thru-hiker needs to find water and services yet still have room for the unexpected. Included are a special glossary of thru-hiker jargon, toll-free numbers for gear manufacturers, and short guides to mammal tracks and bird calls.
