The "Companion" is an annual collaboration of volunteers from the Appalachian Long Distance Hikers Association (ALDHA)--past thru-hikers--and the Appalachian Trail Conference's trail managers, staff and volunteers. It's a guide to hiker-oriented services in towns along the Appalachian Trail and important information (water locations, for example) about shelters and other spots along the footpath itself. Included are basic information for getting to the two termini of the trail, a post-office list, special sections on mammal tracks and bird calls, and toll-free numbers for equipment manufacturers.
