The 215 "early Neo-Babylonian" administrative letters discussed and edited in this study stem from the two major Neo-Babylonian temple archives known to researchers today, Eanna and Ebabbar. The term "formative phase" of the Neo-Babylonian Empire refers to the ca. 40 years between Nabopolassar's accession to the Babylonian throne in 626 BCE and the mid-reign of his son and successor, Nebuchadnezzar, ca. 585 BCE. In many ways, these letters are the closest we get to the erratic drama which was day-to-day life in Babylonia at the mid first millennium BCE. The letters were a vital administrative tool, necessary for the ongoing functioning of these institutions. As such, they provide first-hand testimony for the tasks and obstacles that the Neo-Babylonian bureaucrats faced. This, to some extent, is also true for the legal texts from the archives, and to a lesser extent for the administrative notes. Both groups in fact far surpass the letters in terms of numbers of texts. However, the ad hoc and ephemeral nature of letters, as well as their not strongly standardised phrasing, let us tap into their authors' sense of identity and state of mind. Moreover the patterns of communication between these officials are an important source of information on administrative hierarchies, networks of dependencies and patronage, and bureaucratic procedures. The Neo-Babylonian letters are still one of the most underrepresented and underexploited source material in Neo-Babylonian studies. This is due to the lack of up-to-date editions, the "elusive nature" of epistolography (namely the difficulty in accurately dating and contextualising the letters), as well as the unique philological difficulties of the texts. These factors are in fact feeding each other. No systematic attempt has been made to date and contextualise the Neo-Babylonian administrative letters and they have never been studied as a group. Three interdependent goals stand at the base of this study: 1. Establishing new, up-to-date editions of the early Neo-Babylonian letters from Eanna and Ebabbar; 2. studying these letters as a distinct text group; 3. contextualising the letters. - The study is supplemented by extensive indices.

Administrative Epistolography in the Formative Phase of the Neo-Babylonian Empire (Spatbabylonische Briefe)

The "Code of Hammu-rapi", the collection of judgments which was compiled under the Old Babylonian king Hammu-rapi in the 18th century B.C., is one of the most important legal historical and literary works of the Ancient Near East. The edition of the Codex Hammu-rapi presented by Joachim Oelsner now offers for the first time the text of all individual text representatives in a synoptic presentation as a score. Variants and divergences within the text can thus be immediately surveyed and weighed against each other. Numerous new, previously unpublished cuneiform texts have been integrated into the edition. The translation also takes into account the variants and divergences. Extensive philological comments supplement the text and the translation. The introduction explains the history of the text and its research; particular emphasis is devoted to the study of previous reconstructions of the gap in several columns on the front of the Hammu-rapi stele in the Louvre.

The present richly illustrated study deals with the Neolithic and Chalcolithic anthropomorphic figurines of Cyprus. The profound analysis is supplemented by a comprehensive catalogue, assembling and describing all figurines. In particular, the so-called cruciform figurines, which became emblematic of prehistoric Cyprus, have aroused special interest from the beginning. Even though many scholars have studied the Cypriot figurines in the past, the majority have focused on a limited set of objects, either stylistically, chronologically, geographically or with regard to specific materials. Furthermore, excavations, conducted in the last decades, have considerably broadened the figurative repertoire. However, a comprehensive examination of the whole assemblage based on the current state of research, the aim of this investigation, was hitherto still missing. To date, almost all prehistoric Cypriot figurines, except some rare and definitely male specimens, are usually regarded as representations of females, sometimes even as precursors of Aphrodite, thereby viewing them as depictions of a goddess. This hitherto existing perception that the Cypriot prehistoric representations are generally meant to depict women, which became generally excepted and unchallenged, constitutes one of the major concerns of this study. By means of a systematic and detailed analysis of all available information the present study seeks to examine the prehistoric Cypriot figurines within their context. That means not only to investigate the different categories of anthropomorphic representations themselves, but further to explore the evolution, the usage and function as well as the chronological and spatial distribution of these intriguing human depictions as far as possible, and by doing so attempts to attain a better understanding of their significance and meaning within the prehistoric Cypriot society.

The work undertaken by Orit Tsuf represents an important first step toward the full publication of Jacob Kaplan's and Haya Ritter-Kaplan's excavations in Jaffa and its necropolis at Abu Kabir, all of which took place between 1955 and 1974. Part I is devoted to the excavations, among others of the "Sounding X" with its Persian to Byzantine remains, the Residence in Area C, the Agora of Jaffa, the Historic Sacred Center (Tel Yaffo) and Hellenistic to Byzantine graves. Part II focuses on the excavated objects. At the core of the study stands the fully illustrated pottery collection of ca. 1200 ceramic objects and fragments dating from Iron Age to Byzantine Period. Further chapters are devoted to glass vessels, stone vessels and metal finds.

Tell It in Gath: Studies in the History and Archaeology of Israel. Essays in Honor of Aren M. Maeir on the Occasion of His Sixtieth Birthday (Agypten Und Altes Testament)

M. Krebernik and J.J.W. Lisman offer the first comprehensive score edition of and the first attempt at an integral translation of the Early Dynastic Sumerian hymns, known in the literature as the Zame Hymns (za-mi), published by R.D. Biggs in 1974 in his 'Inscriptions from Tell Tell Ab&#363; &#7778;alabikh (IAS). Most of the deities featuring in the collection of the short Zame Hymns also occur in the god lists from Ab&#363; &#7778;al&#257;b&#299;&#7723; and F&#257;ra. The hymns are embedded in a narrative which relates to the institution of the cult places for the great gods by the supreme god Enlil in Nippur. The last hymn is dedicated to Lisin and her cult place &#284;ES.GI, which is most probably to be identified with Ab&#363; &#7778;al&#257;b&#299;&#7723;, where Lisin is installed as city goddess. If one considers these facts, it becomes very likely that the Zame Hymns were performed when the temple of Lisin was inaugurated and/or when the foundation of her temple and her installation there were re-enacted in the course of a cyclic (annual?) festival. The score edition and translation are supplemented by a detailed commentary on various cultural, historical, grammatical and orthographic aspects. An appendix is devoted to the colophons of contemporary texts from Tell Ab&#363; &#7778;al&#257;b&#299;&#7723;, F&#257;ra and Ebla. The additional 'Synopsis of the Cuneiform Manuscripts of the Zame Hymns' will enable an easy verification of the transcription.
