Sir Hugh Cholmley played many roles in an extraordinary life, transforming himself from a spendthrift play-boy into a successful estate manager, local militia officer, and member of parliament for Scarborough. He became identified with a parliamentary group of rebellious Yorkshire gentry who conspired to kill Charles I's chief minister, the earl of Strafford, but after holding Scarborough's harbour and castle for Parliament he suddenly and controversially defected to the Royalist cause; after the king's defeat he endured years in exile before returning to a ruined estate in Yorkshire. Dr Binns' book is the first to bring together Sir Hugh's surviving writings, which bear witness to some of the most momentous events in English history: of principal importance are his autobiography and his three Civil War essays on the tragic fate of the Hothams, the bloody battle on Marston Moor, and the great siege of Scarborough Castle. JACK BINNS is former history master at Scarborough Sixth Form College, and Scarborough in the Civil War period has been the focus of much of his research as a local historian.

Brearley worked in Wakefield as a cloth frizzer, operating a mill which put a fine raised nap on woollen cloth by running it between two boards covered with sand. Many of the entries in his memorandum book reflect his familiarity with the region's woollen and worsted industries, covering all aspects of the trade, from directions for making particular kinds of cloth or dyeing a particular colour, to descriptions of merchants' activities, and the markets, domestic and foreign, where they bought and sold cloth. Brearley's work as a frizzer underlies the many entries describing machines and inventions (some more practical than others) which are described and often drawn in these pages. The passage of the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act created an immense archive of letters, reports and memos from the responsible bodies. The papers form part of the huge Ministry of Health archive held at the National Archives at Kew, where the lack of an effective index or list of contents hinders access to this key resource. Thus Paul Carter's transcription of the Bradford Poor Law Union correspondence is the first regional collection to have been fully transcribed, and from it can be seen the wealth of social and historical detail contained in the papers. The Bradford material contains the raw data for this highly detailed investigation into the changes from the 'old' to the 'new' poor law system in one of the fastest growing urban centres in England. Chapters cover local and national relief provision, and the full remit of poor law concerns from individual pauper cases and workhouse provision to alarm in relation to the growth of radical working class ideas and the anti-Poor Law riots in the town. From 1705 to 1709, a legal battle was fought out in the court of exchequer between Thomas, Lord Wharton, and Reginald Marriott Esq. over the lead mines on Grinton moor in Swaledale. In its day this was a cause célèbre due to the high political office occupied by Lord Wharton and because of the vast sums of money that were at stake. Large numbers of local people were drawn in as witnesses on both sides and their testimony provides a fascinating insight into the life of this remote Yorkshire valley in the opening years of the eighteenth century. The book follows the course of the action, step by step, and contains full transcriptions of all the substantive documents in the case, most of which appear here for the first time; it also raises important questions about the truthfulness of witnesses, the process of taking oral evidence, and the likelihood of jury tampering.
