<p>Bruce Head has been a leading Canadian painter and designer for more than fifty years. This first monograph looks at his artistic career in the context of his experimentation and innovation with materials. An innovator of the so-called ink graphic in the 1950s, Head gradually moved toward a painterly and lyrical approach to organic abstraction. Making a radical departure in the 1960s, Head punctured canvases, stretched canvases over film reels and sewed and collaged canvases to create elegant and surprising results. Throughout, Head has enjoyed a practice as a designer and has consistently blurred the boundaries of printmaking, sculpture, sewing, design and painting. Two scholarly essays provide a rich understanding of Head’s contribution to the last fifty years of Canadian art history.</p>

Kiugak Ashoona has the longest artistic career of any living Cape Dorset artist and is one of the most recognized Inuit artists in the world today. Born in 1933 and son renowned Inuit artist Pitseolak Ashoona, Kiugak Ashoona began his own prodigious artistic career as a child while living at a camp on the land. In the beginning his subjects and style were realistic but, after marriage into a powerful Shaman’s family, this soon changed. Since the late 1950s, Ashoona’s sculptures and drawings have been infused with an awareness of Inuit mythology and shamanism. Today his work is celebrated for its dramatic power and formal beauty. This first retrospective monograph contains a study of Kiugak Ashoona’s original drawings as well as interviews conducted with the artist and is extensively illustrated.

Published on the occasion of a major donation of more than 200 works of art once belonging to Austrian-born Dr. Ferdinand Eckhardt (1902-1995), this profusely illustrated publication features essays by international scholars who explore the richness of the collection in the context of German and Austrian Expressionism as a whole. Featured works include paintings by Walter Gramatté; woodcuts by Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, and Emil Nolde; lithographs by Oskar Kokoschka and George Grosz; and etchings by Käthe Kollwitz and Egon Schiele. The Eckhardt-Gramatté Collection was founded by Ferdinand Eckhardt in honour of his wife, composer and musician Sophie Carmen Eckhardt-Gramatté (1899-1974), and her first husband, the second generation German Expressionist artist Walter Gramatté (1897-1929). From 1953 to 1974 Ferdinand Eckhardt was the director of the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
