There is a widespread misunderstanding among those who see pictures on TV or in the newspapers that an artist can sketch as much as they like in court. As lawyers know, far from taking a palate and easel into the public gallery, any attempt at photography, drawings or visual representations is strictly verboten. Artists have to memorise in court the colours, shades, clothing, facial mannerisms and physical idiocyncracies then go out and draw a likeness from memory . . . against the clock.

On an August evening in 1928 May Donoghue, a shop assistant, entered a cafe in Paisley. The circumstances of her visit made legal history. A ginger beer was ordered for Mrs Donoghue who famously complained that, to her surprise and shock, a decomposed snail had tumbled from the bottle into her glass. Mrs Donoghue sued for the nervous shock she claimed to have suffered as a result. The question whether she had a case in law against the manufacturer of the ginger beer was argued as far as the House of Lords. It is hard to overstate the importance of the decision in Donoghue v Stevenson. It represents, perhaps, the greatest contribution made by English and Scottish lawyers to the development of the common law. Donoghue v Stevenson made it clear that, even without a contract between the parties, a duty of care is owed by 'A' to take reasonable care to avoid acts or omissions which could reasonably be foreseen as likely to cause injury to his neighbour: 'B'. This concept, developed by the great jurist Lord Atkin, has become known by the universal shorthand, 'the neighbour principle'. Who, Lord Atkin asked rhetorically, is 'in law' my neighbour? Donoghue v Stevenson provides the answer. The Snail and the Ginger Beer tells the full story of this remarkable case. It provides vivid biographical sketches of the protagonists and of the great lawyers who were involved in the case. It sets Donoghue v Stevenson in its historical context and re-evaluates the evidence. The roots of the neighbour principle are excavated in the parable of the Good Samaritan and the case law of the United States. The constitutional importance of the case is also dealt with; the blow it struck for a moral approach to the law which departed from a rigid doctrine of precedent. Finally, the book investigates the influence of Donoghue v Stevenson across the common law world: from the USA to the countries of what is now the Commonwealth.

The Old Munster Circuit the legal memoirs of Maurice Healy, was first published in 1939 by Michael Joseph, and has reappeared in several editions over the last 60 years. It has been out of print in recent times and much sought after. This edition also contains a Biographical Introduction by Charles Lysaght. These amusing memoirs affectionately describe the workings and people of the Munster Circuit, where Healy practised from 1910 to 1914. Healy goes to some length in trying to describe and explain his countrymen to an English audience: "The difference of atmosphere between the two countries was exemplified in a case of my father's which came to be tried in London before Mr Justice Darling. The point at issue was the identity of a valuable picture, and hosts of witnesses, many of them humble Irish folk, were examined on either side. One of these Irishmen who had tuned his harp to the romantic air of his own County Court was a shock to a judge of pedestrian imagination. Darling at last turned to him sternly and said 'Tell me, in your country, what happens to a witness who does not tell the truth?' 'Begor, me Lord, ' replied the Irishman, with a candour that disarmed all criticism, 'I think his side usually wins.' The Law of Rights of Light is a new and comprehensive treatment of the controversial topic of rights of light. It considers how rights can be established, what constitutes an infringement of those rights and what remedies can be provided for the infringement of those rights. It explains how claims may be defended and rights overridden using the mechanism under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 s.237. By setting the law in its wider context, the book seeks to show that, despite the technicalities which arise, there are no legal problems with which a competent lawyer cannot grapple. The history of  Butterworth's, England's leading law publisher, falls into four parts - the 19th century when it was sedately and modestly run by its eponymous founders; the first four decades of the 20th century when it was dynamically built by Stanley Bond; the thirty-five years following Bond's death in 1943, when the company was owned by the Bond Family Trust; and the years since 1965 when Butterworth's/LexisNexis became a division of the International Publishing Corporation, which later became Reed International and latterly Reed Elsevier.  This book covers the third of these four periods. Stanley Bond, a largely unrecognised publishing genius, built Butterworth's, over a period of fifty years, from obscurity into a major publishing house. In his will, he placed control of the company in the hands of a trust, to which he expressed his wish that his company should be preserved for his two sons. This did not happen. The company was sold twenty-four years after Bond's death. How this came about is a story of intrigue and power play, in researching which the author had access to confidential archives and was able to interview witnesses of the drama. The result is a tale that throws light on the mores of privately-run companies sliding unwillingly into the era of corporate ownership. Bond made very few mistakes in his publishing career, but there was one chink in his armour. He left it too late to get married, too late that is to father children who could take over the business after his death. When he died aged 65 in 1943 his two sons were aged three and one.  By a strange quirk of fate, the author Gordon Graham employed Ian Bond in 1965/66 without knowing his connection with Butterworth's. He also met many of the other participants in the drama, including the one man, who, above all, was responsible for thwarting Stanley Bond's plans: his Nemesis.
