Jan Childers rose to lead that fleet against freedom's most deadly enemy -- Earth itself. .INTERVIEW WITH RICH WEYANDHow did you write Childers? I had no idea where Childers was going when I started. I didn’t plot it out in advance, it just sort of grew. It wrote very fast. I had the initial 60,000 words of the story arc in a month. Then I went back and filled in another 30,000 words in a couple of weeks. Your main character is female. Is that an unusual choice in science fiction? I don’t think so. I’m really comfortable writing strong women. I’ve known a bunch of them, and have lived with one for over thirty years. And there are a number of strong women in science fiction, including Honor Harrington, Kylara Vatta, Cordelia Naismith, Maureen Johnson Smith, just to name a few. Women think differently than men, often with different priorities, and you have to take that into account, but I don’t have any problem with that. Your main character suffers from PTSD for much of the book. Was that difficult to write? No, but I had to be careful to get it right. The signs are pretty subtle, because I’m not writing close third person. I’m an omniscient third person writer. So I’m not in the character’s head, where it would be easier for the reader to spot. An early reader, who is a PTSD counselor, saw the signs very clearly, and said he was hoping she got help before it all came apart for her. He was relieved when he got to the part of the book where she started counseling. Your technology choices are interesting. No warp drive, no blasters, no artificial gravity. My degrees are in physics. When something new is discovered in physics, all the old things still work the same. I didn’t want to violate relativity and have faster-than-light drive in normal space. I postulated the existence of a hyperspace, which we simply haven’t discovered yet, in which all the points are closer together, so you can move slower than light in hyperspace and yet come back into normal space more than light-speed distance away. That’s about the only big new thing in the Childers universe. Does your politics get into your writing? No. I’m a libertarian, so liberals call me a conservative and conservatives call me a liberal. In Childers, the only politics is that the Commonwealth of Free Planets, a loose confederation of planets with good civil rights, is seen as superior to the tyrannies and plutarchies on other planets, including Earth. That’s a pretty easy call, no matter what your politics. Where does your writing fit into science fiction writ large? Childers is somewhere between hard science fiction and space opera. It’s not pure hard science fiction, because I’m using hyperspace, but it’s not pure space opera, either. There are no blasters, artificial gravity, light sabers, or mystical forces. I grew up on Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, and Andre Norton, and they are big influences. My primary influences among living writers are probably David Weber, Elizabeth Moon, and Lois Bujold. Readers of those authors should feel right at home in the Childers universe. What’s next? The double volume Childers: Absurd Proposals finishes the Childers trilogy. That’s released. Galactic Mail: Revolution is a sequel set 175 years or so after the close of the Childers trilogy. That’s released. I’m now working on a prequel to the Childers trilogy, set 150 years earlier, which is the story of the founding of the Commonwealth of Free Planets.

They were going to be separate volumes, but the story arcs flowed one into the other, and together they were about the same size as Childers - about 90,000 words - so I released them in one volume. That concluded the trilogy.Where did that title come from?One chapter early in Colony War is titled An Absurd Proposal. There is a chapter early in Galactic Mail titled Another Absurd Proposal. Those two proposals, and their implementation, are the plot drivers for the two story arcs.Did it write as fast as Childers?Yes. I don’t outline or plot or write backstory. Once I have the basic direction in mind, I just start writing. It took about five weeks to write Absurd Proposals. I think part of it is that I started writing short stories, and I’m still getting used to the novel format. The result is that I drive the plot along pretty hard. None of the Childers Universe books is a ho-hum read.I’ll say. In Childers, there were eight space battles!Eight space battles and three hand-to-hand combats. In Absurd Proposals, there are thirty space battles, though only thirteen are on scene, plus an assassination. Of whom? Nope. No spoilers.What about your covers?I like people on a cover. No matter the setting or genre, good stories are about people. With Childers, I lucked out. I was looking for a 14-year-old female model with hair a half-inch long and one literally walked into my photographer’s studio. She is the daughter of another SF author, a friend of mine. She absolutely nailed the ten-mile stare I was looking for. For the Absurd Proposals cover, I needed someone who could credibly be the same person twenty years later. The same photographer had a shot in his portfolio of a woman with similar facial structure, eyes, ears, and hair. She’s also a martial arts expert, like Jan Childers, and has that don’t-mess-with-me look. Lucky again.You never mention race or ethnicity of your characters.I seldom describe characters at all. I have a mental image of the characters - I think you have to, to write them - but I prefer to write dialogue and action. The Commonwealth is a multi-ethnic free society which has been interbreeding across racial and ethnic lines for generations. And the names are a clue to that. Alice Chang, for example, or Ashok Gonzalez. Earth names and Outer Colony names are ethnically matching, like Jorge Hernandez or Marc Laurent, because their populations aren’t as mobile.You have a lot of female officers and enlisted in the Commonwealth Space Force. How do you choose the sex of a character?I usually just flip a coin. It doesn’t matter to me, in that context. If I were writing about infantry - you know, space marines or something - that could be harder, because the sexes aren’t the same, no matter what anybody says. I’ve been around 65 years now, and I’ve noticed. But in a space navy context, I don’t think the sex-related differences matter as much as competence and personal qualities. At the same time, once I’ve selected the sex of a character, the differences sometimes drive the character a little differently. A couple of times I went back and changed the sex of a character because it just worked better for the plot.Reviews on the series have been very good.I was hoping for an average above four stars. The actual ratings shocked me. It's very gratifying. So I guess I’ll keep writing!

How is Patricia Dawson different from Jan Childers?
Jan Childers joined the Commonwealth Space Force at 14 after studying for years to pass the Commonwealth Citizenship Exam. She had been preparing her whole life for the role she took on in Childers and Absurd Proposals. Patricia Dawson is an accountant and mother, who in her 30s has thrust upon her a role she is not prepared for. She has five years to prepare before it all falls in the pot, but, even so, it’s a stretch.
And the weapons have changed.
There is one large space battle, but you’re right. Patricia Dawson’s weapon is primarily a semi-automatic pistol. Well, that and kinetic energy weapons. And some nukes. And the Marines. But mostly her pistol.
That back-cover tagline, “How ruthless are you prepared to be?” is rather chilling.
One of her party asks her that before the action starts. They have eighteen people who are supposed to take over the largest organization in human history and restore it to its proper role. And nobody’s sure if they can do it, or what it will take. But his words prove prophetic.
Isn’t GMR quite a bit shorter than the two Childers books?
It’s 45,500 words, so it’s a novel. It’s about the same length as Colony War and Galactic Mail, although those two were published in one volume. The plot was over, the story arc complete. I could have padded it out, but I like the pacing as it is.
Which is pretty breakneck pacing.
Childers covers a bit over 20 years. Absurd Proposals covers another ten or so. The action in GMR all occurs in five weeks. Instead of eight space battles and three hand-to-hand combats, like Childers, or thirteen space battles and an assassination, like Absurd Proposals, we get one space battle, three planetary bombardments, and four gunfights. In five weeks.
And Jan Childers makes a cameo appearance?
Three of them, actually. One in a verbal history, and the other two in a sort of Hari Seldon video-from-the-grave role. I had fun writing Jan Childers at age 95.
What about the cover?
For GMR, I needed someone with a family likeness to Jan Childers, as she’s her seventh great granddaughter, but I also wanted someone with long hair, to emphasize that Patricia Dawson isn’t a CSF spacer, who wear their hair short because of zero-g. She’s a civilian, pressed into service to rescue the situation. I lucked out again. The photographer had a shot in his portfolio that was perfect for the cover, right down to the semi-automatic pistol.
What’s next?
The next book is a prequel, about the founding of the Commonwealth of Free Planets.

This entire book fits between the chapters "The Grand Tour" and "Commanding Officer, Task Force 32" of Childers, the first book in the series.Bill Campbell is the primary character?Yes, the action here centers around Bill Campbell, although Jan Childers is also here for much of it and they have some good scenes together. Tien Jessen, Pavel Nimsky, and Sammy Heyerdahl are all here, too, along with a bunch of new characters.What's the primary thrust?We finally find out what Bill Campbell does for a living. All we've really known until now is that he's in the Intelligence Division, and he has a role in counter-espionage, at least after Kodu. He never talks about his work in the trilogy, and Jan doesn't ask. They both have clearances that do not allow them to tell each other everything. They make something of a joke about it in the trilogy.This is on the Grand Tour?Yes. After the Feirman payback, Admiral Stepic sends Jan Childers out on a training and drill mission, to bring a lot of Commonwealth planets up to speed on the standard Fleet Book of Maneuvers. Birken and Durand, afraid Bill Campbell will take half-retirement rather than endure a two-year separation from Jan, send Campbell out to assess the intelligence operations on whatever planets Jan visits.And there's a problem with Bliss.Yes, hence the title. There's a major problem on Bliss. and Campbell is going to 'fix' it. The need to replace the head of intelligence on Bliss after the Grand Tour is mentioned in the trilogy, and that he retires, but no more than that.Did this write as fast as the other books?Not quite. It took 29 days to write once I had the plot elements sorted out in my head. For 48000+ words, that's a little long. But there's a lot of timing issues here, because you have flight times to take into account, and the timing of Jan's planet leave was already set in Childers. I didn't want any discrepancies between the trilogy and this book. I also had to think about how forensic tools, with which I am very familiar, might work in virtual reality. That was cool, but took time.What about the cover?A friend of mine, Matt Shute, posted a selfie on Facebook a couple years back. It was just such a compelling picture. It has its issues, of focus and lighting, but in a night shot, I thought it would work out, especially in a thumbnail version, which is what sells ebooks. Softening the background keeps the foreground more sharply focused than the background. So it's sort of a night-time selfie of Campbell in Joy. The model is a little young for the character, but it worked for me. The background is a portion of a larger picture of part of Hong Kong. I didn't want a recognizable US city, obviously. I think the result conveys the espionage/counter-espionage nature of the book.What's next?I have this plot idea, and it keeps pulling me to write it. Is EMPIRE part of the Childers Universe, or a completely new series?
EMPIRE is a completely new series. I wrote myself out of a job in Childers. Jan Childers solves the interstellar war problem, so life gets much less interesting from a novelist’s point of view. The Childers books start a few hundred years in the future, and span about three hundred years. EMPIRE is likely a thousand years or so in the future, and spans only about thirty years across all five planned books.
What are the core technologies underlying the science in EMPIRE?
Fully immersive virtual reality is here. I think direct neural VR is virtually a certainty. Hyperspace is here as well, although it works differently than in the Childers Universe. I need hyperspace to have interstellar travel while not violating normal-space physics, but it’s only a one-layer hyperspace, not the multi-layered hyperspace of Childers. Finally, EMPIRE has quantum-entanglement radios, which allows something like the Web across the entire EMPIRE. Real-time connectivity. So you can stream video across light years in real time.
Are you doing something new here with plotting?
Yes. Childers grew organically. I didn’t have five books in mind at the start. I didn’t even know if Childers was going to be novel-length. I just started writing. Each book in the series was planned after the last book was done. For EMPIRE, I had a five-book story arc laid out before I started this first book.
So what’s the grand scheme?
Well, without getting into spoilers, the five-book arc is the story of Robert Allan Dunham. I can’t say any more without major spoilers. This first book is the story of how Bobby Dunham, his sister Dee, and their friends grow up and ally with the Empress to reform a hugely corrupt Imperial bureaucracy.
The cover blurb says the Empire is 150,000 planets and 300 trillion human beings. That’s a huge scale.
Yes, but it’s still a human story. If you had told someone in 1000 AD that in 2000 AD there would be cities with twenty million people in them, countries with over a billion people, and seven billion people on Earth, they would have thought you were crazy. Even Rome at the height of its power had a population of barely a million. So there are lots of planets, and lots of people, but the human story is still about what does this person do, how does this person’s life unfold, against this bigger backdrop.
How did EMPIRE write? Was it fast?
EMPIRE: Reformer is 88000 words and took 44 days to write, so about 2000 words a day. That includes non-writing days. I take off one day a week even in mid-novel, and sometimes I have to take a day off to rake leaves or something. I usually write about 2500 words per writing day, and that maintained through this book.
What about the cover? That’s a departure for you.
For the Childers books, I used photography of real people. I have seen a lot of book covers that were artwork, and the characters often just weren’t real to me. They weren’t human, but more like a detailed cartoon. Lifeless. But I found a wonderful artist on-line, Aaron Griffin in England. Even very raw sketches from him catch the humanity of his subject, like a pencil drawing could just start talking to you. They’re alive. He’s a terrific young talent, and I contracted with him for the five-book series.

How long did it take to write EMPIRE: Usurper?
About 55 days. Normally, I can write a novel in a month or so, averaging 2000 to 2500 words per day. I only averaged 1400 words a day on EMPIRE: Usurper, because it has a lot of moving parts and because I didn't take a month off after completing it. I sort of took my time writing it instead.
What's the basic plotline?
Deanna becomes Empress of Sintar at age 27. We followed her in the first book, how she was cured of this terrible disease by Imperial medicine, how she got a scholarship to university, and how she became the Empress's assistant in trying to reform the corrupt bureaucracy. She feels she owes, literally, her whole life to the Empire, and she is determined to do right by it. This book follows her efforts to continue and step up her predecessor's reforms, against the plotting and machinations of the bureaucracy.
Does the confrontation between Throne and Council turn violent?
Yes, and that's all I'll say about it. Major spoilers are possible.
Is there anything controversial in EMPIRE: Usurper?
We would find their justice system strange. They have police, and courts, and rights of evidence, trial by jury, and all the rest, just as most Western countries do. That is the system of low justice. But the sovereign, in this case the Empress, also has a system of high justice. She can find anyone guilty of crimes against the Throne. She is judge, jury, and executioner. That is likely to be strange for someone raised on Western values.
What about the cover?
That’s another incredible original artwork by Aaron Griffin, an exceptional young artist in the UK I found via the net. It depicts Deanna -- now the Empress Ilithyia II -- on the day of her coronation. The storm clouds gathering behind her are emblematic of the coming conflict.
What comes next in EMPIRE?
The Throne strikes back against the Council. The Throne must prevail for the Empire to survive.
