The purpose of this book is to systematically explain whether and how attitudes toward the power of the European Parliament (EP) affect voter turnout in EP elections. The EP is the only European Union institution that ensures democratic representation within the EU; members of the EP have been directly elected by European citizens every five years since 1979. Based on turnout, however, it appears that few people care about the EP elections. Turnout rate for these elections is not only lower than that for national elections, but it has also steadily declined from 1979 to 1999. Do people abstain from voting because less is at stake in the EP elections? Are Euroskeptics less likely to vote in EP elections? My findings confirm that attitudes toward the EP influence and support for the EU influence the decision to turnout in the EP elections, even after controlling for contextual and demographic variables.

To lose teeth and be obliged to use removable prostheses might impact dramatically on your everyday activities. Prosthodontics is aiming to enable the patients to eat whatever they like, but also to make them feel socially comfortable with artificial teeth. However, there is an individual diversity which makes it impossible to assess the impact of tooth loss without concern for individual attributes. The aim of this thesis was to study the impact of oral prostheses on oral health- related quality of life (OHRQOL). Additional aims were to study social inequalities in oral health, attitudes towards costs for dental care and care utilization. The number of remaining teeth was more important than the type of denture when explaining OHRQOL. The type of replacement, in terms of fixed or removable denture, was less important for those with few or no remaining teeth, than for all others. Interactions were observed between number of remaining teeth and type of denture when explaining OHRQOL. As a whole the thesis shows that social and dental conditions and cost for dental care play a great role for dental care utilization as well as for OHRQOL.

Boys? underachievement has become a topical issue in recent years. Within the New Zealand primary school that is the focus of this study it was a catalyst for a ?Boys? Project? which encompassed a range of innovations designed to address boys? underachievement by re-culturing the school to make it a more positive environment for them.Literature reveals contrasting and conflicting theoretical perspectives that contribute to the debate around boys? achievement. One perspective accepts that boys and girls are different and schools should be expected to change so that these differences can be accommodated. The alternative perspective suggests that differences between girls and boys should not be viewed as inevitable and that, for boys, schools and society should work to change unhelpful attitudes and behaviours if their learning needs are to be addressed. Boys? underachievement is indeed a complex issue. This research concludes that educational outcomes for boys will be positively affected by a school culture that fosters strong relationships, a focus on learning, and an understanding of how beliefs and attitudes about gender are influential on learning.

Since the ancient past scholars have wondered about the relationship between creative activity and the tangible reward of producing that activity. Does getting paid to be creative have a positive or detrimental effect on the outcome? Recent studies have shown an "overjustification" effect, wherein participants not expecting a reward produce more creative output than those expecting a reward. The goal of the current research was to immunize college students against the overjustification effect, the case in which the expectation of an external reward leads to lowered levels of creativity and intrinsic motivation. Participants received immunization through video and writing activities, then were asked to write two poems with or without the expectation of reward at the end. Participants’ intrinsic motivation was assessed, and their poems were rated for creativity. Participants showed an overjustification effect but the immunization did not produce a significant result. The study contains a substantial overview of the literature on overjustification and immunization and is of interest to anyone working in Educational or Behavioral Psychology.

Teaching a second language to very young children... Is that a crime? Do their minds get overloaded? Do they get confused by being exposed to two languages? How about the babies who have parents speaking different languages, or those whose parents moved to a foreign country? Is there a common experience or a research that claims bilingual children have remarkable deficiencies? My work is intended to find the answer to these questions. In the first part you can read about theorists and researchers'' findings about language acquisition and bilinguality. In the second half of the book I introduce my own research, which was done in a Budapest kindergarten. On the one hand, I had a great time there, on the other hand, my assumption about the right answer to the questions above was only made stronger.

Introducing English As a Foreign Language in Pre-school Situations

The growing trend of inclusion affects students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) who often have great difficulty and fail in general education. This study examines the perceptions and opinions of secondary EBD students on their inclusive experiences. Students completed a survey on ideal practices they would like from general and special educators followed by a survey on actual experiences. They described the advantages and challenges of inclusion, ending with recommendations for teachers. Major findings indicate that EBD students fell into two groups: high-achieving or low-functioning. High-achieving students wanted accommodations to help them succeed academically, while low-functioning students wanted no accommodations to maximize their similarity to general education peers. Both groups wanted support from teachers, albeit in different ways. High achieving students wanted help to really function like their general education peers; low functioning students wanted to just look like their general education peers. Both groups wanted to avoid embarrassment while learning and socializing with peers without disabilities.

Do we ever stop playing dress-up? Sociologist Sarah Jane Clancy investigates how young adults utilize fashion and body presentation to negotiate a sense of identity amidst a postmodern culture which provides multiple options for dress and identity expression. By employing a survey, Clancy first investigates the importance of fashion and body presentation to the sense of self of young adults. Second, Clancy examines the extent to which indulgence in fashion and body presentation reflects both experimentation and hedonism characteristic of postmodernity. Clancy discusses how the postmodern context undermines the former practical and patriarchal concerns of fashion in lieu of variable and experimental identity expression. This research offers a valuable perspective by filling the void in the identity literature which currently focuses on the body itself rather than the use of fashion and clothing to make self-statements.
