Environmental destruction, besides being the immediate factor in fueling competition over natural resources, can also potentially lead to loss of source of living, which may result in the population migration. In this study, an attempt has been made to develop a conceptual framework of conceivable social conflicts that are more likely to develop in an environmental migration induced scarcity situation. In order to test some of the ideas of the framework, a case study was conducted in South Asia. Since 1975, India is diverting most of the dry season flow of the Ganges River at Farakka Barrage to one of her internal rivers for her own development. It has caused various environmental problems in the south-western part of Bangladesh and led to loss of the sources of living of a large number of populations.

Providing minority populations with autonomy is gaining appreciation as a method of solving, managing, and even pre-empting ethnic conflict. However, in spite of the enthusiasm for autonomy solutions among academics and practitioners alike, there is reason to argue that the provision of autonomy for a minority may under certain circumstances increase rather than decrease the likelihood of conflict. 
In certain political conditions, autonomy strengthens the separate identity of a minority; it thereby increases its incentives to collective action against the state; and most of all its capacity to seek separation from the central state, through the state-like institutions that autonomy entails. The objective of this dissertation is to investigate whether territorial autonomy was a contributing factor to the violent ethnic conflicts that have erupted in the South Caucasus since the late 1980s. 
It presents a theoretical argument to explain which qualities of autonomy solutions increase the likelihood of conflict; and then seeks to outline possible rival explanations derived from the theoretical literature. The dissertation then examines the explanatory value of any of the factors under study, it then moves on to study in depth the five minorities existing on the territory of the republic of Georgia. 
Three of them, Abkhazia, Ajaria, and South Ossetia, were autonomous, whereas two had no autonomous status. The dissertation shows how the institution of autonomy, by promoting an ethnic elite in control of state-like institutions, and by enhancing factors such as leadership, economic viability, and external support, played a crucial together with these factors in the escalation to conflict in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, whereas the absence of autonomy mitigated conflict in Javaheti, and other populations.

This study examines the new ecological dimensions of the regional impulse in the poetry of three major, contemporary poets of the Pacific Northwest of the United States. The study opens with a survey and analysis of the discussion of a general regional aesthetic in poetry in the Northwest during the 20th century and argues that the important development visible in the regional impluse since World War II in these poets has less to do with an earlier regional aesthetic than with the elements of an ecological metaphor. strategies of expressing the metaphor within the context of their common region is explored. It is argued that in the poetry the ecological metaphor conveys a new view of the relationship between man and non-human nature, between man and place, in which man is seen as an integrated and inseparable part of the natural systems of a region. This poetic metaphor is ethical in that it voices a concern about the destruction of the natural environment, suggests a model of ecologically correct behaviour, and envisages a harmonious balance where the human and non-human meet as equals. integrity of the non-human world, the poetry tends to reject images and emblems of our contemporary industrial-technological society, and to harken back not only to earlier Romantic and Transcendental currents in poetry, but more significantly, to the vision of man's place in nature as traditionally perceived by native Americans. Finally, the study concludes with a brief survey of other Northwest poets who emphasize regional and/or ecological themes - including a glance at three prominent Northwest Native American poets - and a brief discussion of the political dimensions of this metaphor.
