Established in 1999 as a partnership between the University of Tennessee and Battelle Memorial Institute, UT-Battelle, LLC, has been responsible for delivering the Department of Energy’s research mission during a period of historic change at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Shaped by the unique cultures of both the University and Battelle, the changes have literally transformed the face of the Laboratory from an outdated institution characterized by shabby facilities and giant parking lots into one of the world’s most modern and successful research campuses.
The story of UT-Battelle is how an unprecedented partnership between the Department of Energy and the state of Tennessee produced benefits for a national laboratory and a land grant university that exceeded all expectations. Told in narrative form, the story begins with the critical decision by the University of Tennessee to seek a management role at the Laboratory, the bold proposal to the Department of Energy, and an inside look into how UT-Battelle sought to expand the Laboratory’s research program by “breaking the mold” and bringing about fundamental changes in how the Laboratory is operated. In particular, the book examines the strategy of campus modernization that in less than five years used an innovative partnership with the University and Battelle to transform the face of the Laboratory and play a part in successful competitions for major new research programs.
Using historical images, the book captures many of the people and events that produced a period of truly remarkable progress at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

In the second half of 1845 the focus of Polk's correspondence shifted from those issues relating, to the formation of his administration and distribution of party patronage to those that would give shape and consequence to his presidency: the admission of Texas, preparation for its defense, restoration of diplomatic relations with Mexico, and termination of joint occupancy of the Oregon Country. In addition to the texts, briefs, and annotations, the editors have calendared all of the documents for the last six months of 1845. Entries for unpublished letters include the documents' dates, addressees, classifications, repositories, and precis. The Polk Project is sponsored by the University of Tennessee and assisted by grants from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Tennessee Historical Commission.

The key and accompanying list include the trees known to be native or naturalized in Tennessee. Species known to occur in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park are indicated by an asterisk (*) before the name. Certain species not native to the region, some of which escape from cultivation, are included but are so designated by CAPITALS. The present key is an expansion of the “Summer Key to the Trees of Eastern Tennessee” by the same authors, Jour. Tenn. Acad. Sci 22:114-133, 1947, which was based on ten years of experience with the key prepared by Stanley A. Cain in 1937, for use in introductory botany classes at the University of Tennessee. It is in many places a recognizable descendant of Cain’s key and the obligation is acknowledged with sincere appreciation.The key is based on summer characters, primarily those of leaves, the most important of which are defined on pages 22-24 and illustrated on the inside covers. The illustrations were prepared by Jane W. Roller. At times the identification of a species is facilitated by the use of flower, fruit, bud, leafscar, habit, and habitat characters, but also they are usually not required. The key is artificial, no attempt having been made to reveal phylogenetic relationships.
