The "Armenian Trilogy," edited by Dickran Kouymjian, marks a departure in play writing for Saroyan, from theatrics to introspection. The three plays contained in this volume are the most "Armenian" of his writings. "Armenians," the first play, is about countrymen in diaspora, in Fresno, CA in 1921, six years after the last round of atrocities by the Turks against Armenians. Saroyan deals with regional stereotypes and larger issues of diaspora. "Bitlis," is a one-act play that features Bill Saroyan, the Armenian-American writer and his pilgrimage to his ancestral home in what was once Armenia. "Haratch," the most political of the three, Saroyan takes the stage in a visit to the Armenian daily newspaper in Paris. These autobiographical reminiscences, spannig almost seventy years, give flesh and bones to Cornelia Brierly's long membership in the Taliesin Fellowship and its two famous homesites: Taliesin in Spring Green, Wisconsin and Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Arizona. Founded in 1932 by Frank Lloyd Wright and his wife, Olgivanna, the Fellowship was a unique educational experiment designed to enrich and challenge young architects with the ideas and principles of organic architecture. Apprentices to Mr. Wright learned by "doing"- everything from practical chores to technical and artistic training. As one of the first apprentices in the Fellowship, Brierly tells her story from the invaluable perspective of one who was there almost at the beginning. Before long, she was a working colleague of the Master Architect and, in the last thirty years of his career, made important design contributions to many of his building projects. She also undertook commissions of her own, became a wife and mother, and, since Wright's death in 1959, has been a leader at the two Taliesins to preserve the Wright legacy for future generations. Even today she serves on the board of The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, which oversees the School of Architecture and the design firm that Wright left behind. Brierly's story is important on the long and ever-growing shelf of literature about the twentieth century's foremost architect, not only because of her closeness to Wright and his Fellowship "family," but also because she has observed at first hand the unfolding drama and excitement of organic architecture in our century. Moreover, her affectionate, honest, and perceptive book is a tribute to the Fellowship way of life and to its creative community.

David of Sassoun: Critical Studies on the Armenian Epic (The Press at California State University, Fresno, 2013), 228 pages, a collection of essays by the world's foremost scholars on the great oral epic of Armenia, edited by Dickran Kouymjian and Barlow Der Mugrdechian, has just been published as the newest addition to the Armenian Series of Fresno State's Armenian Studies Program. David of Sassoun is the fourth title in the Armenian Series established through The Press at California State University, Fresno.The essays, by Charles Dowsett, Dickran Kouymjian, Aram Ter-Ghevondian, Earl R. Anderson, Chaké Der Melkonian-Minassian, Frédéric Feydit, Arpiné Khatchadourian, Aram Tolegian, Chaké Der Melkonian-Minassian, Vahé Oshagan, as well as an original poem on David by Ashough Hovnani, were presented at a Symposium organized by Dr. Kouymjian the year after he was invited to the campus to establish a new Program devoted to Armenian Studies. He saw it as Fresno's contribution to the commemoration of the centennial celebration of the discovery and publication of the epic poem, which had survived until the 1970s orally, passed on, generation after generation, for more than a thousand years by anonymous village bards. Every serious scholar from Armenia, France, England, Canada, and the United States who had published on the Armenian epic was invited to participate in the International Symposium entitled “David of Sassoun: The Armenian Folk Epic after a Century.” In addition to the papers of the conference, the current volume contains an introduction outlining the history of the epic as well as a concise summary of all the episodes of the official version established by a team of scholars in Erevan in 1939. The essays are as fresh today as they were when they were written despite the decades, which have passed. Also included at the beginning of the volume is a new variant, the only known version of the epic recorded anywhere in the Diaspora. Because of the publicity generated by the Symposium, Lilyan Chooljian of Fresno, present at the conference, who had recorded a recitation of the variant some years earlier, brought it to the attention of Dr. Kouymjian.Thanks to a generous grant from the Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fund and the M. Victoria Karagozian Kazan and Henry S.
