50th Anniversary of Kanun

The Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults, otherwise known as Kanun, was in many ways a unique cultural institution that took shape some fifty years ago in Iran. The intention was to introduce children and young adults to culture and learning, such as libraries, books, music, film and theater. Not only Tehran, but far and wide, Kanun made it possible for children throughout Iran to be introduced to these facets of culture. Those who worked at Kanun became leading artists, writers and intellectuals of the 20th and the early 21st century Iran. Those who were brought up in Iran in the past five decades understand and appreciate the importance of Kanun, so it is befitting to have a volume in honor of all the children, young adults, women and men who were part of this great cultural center of Iran in the 20th century. This book is a visual record of the cultural output of that institution, along with several essays by those who were involved in Kanun. I hope that Kanun continues to educated and inspire succeeding generations of children who live in that land. Luckily, Kanun is active and alive, and moves at its own pace to educate Iranian children and young adults all over the country.For reasons that are self evident, the focus of this book is on the pre-Revolutionary period of Kanun. This is because there are important figures and actors in Kanun from its inception till the 1979 Revolution now living in Orange County, California. I would like to thank Mr. Noureddin Zarrinkelk, Don Laffoon, Hossein Samakar and Reza Goharzad for making it possible to take on such a project. There are many people who are not mentioned by name here or in the book, but their place will always be known among those who lived the Kanun life. In the end I would like to thanks Mr. Majid Zarrinkelk and a host of local supporters for making the publication of this book possible. Persian Learner Part Three: Intermediate Persian for College Students (Volume 3) (Persian Edition)

In a Middle Persian text known as “Khusro and the Page,” one of the most famous kings of the ancient Iranian world, Khusro I Anusheruwan, is called haft kišwar xawadāy “the King of the Seven Climes.” This title harkens back to at least the Achaemenid period when it was in fact used, and even further back to a Zoroastrian/Avestan world view. From the earliest Iranian hymns, those of the Gāthās of Zarathushtra, through the Younger Avesta and later Pahlavi writings, it is known that the ancient Iranians divided the world into seven climes or regions. Indeed, at some point there was even an aspiration that this world should be ruled by a single king. Consequently, the title of the King of the Seven Climes, used by Khusro I in the sixth century CE, suggests the most ambitious imperial vision that one would find in the literary tradition of the ancient Iranian world. Taking this as a point of departure, the present book aims to be a survey of the dynasties and rulers who thought of going beyond their own surroundings to forge larger polities within the Iranian realm.Thus far, in similar discussions of ancient Iranian history, it has been the convention to set the beginnings of a specifically Iranian world at the rise of Cyrus the Great and the establishment of the Achaemenid Empire. But in fact, this notion is only a recent paradigm, which became popular in Iran in the late 1960s owing to traditions of Classical and European historiography. At the same time, there are other narratives that can be given for the history of the Iranian World, including those that take us to 5000 BCE to sites such as Sialk, near Kashan, or other similar archaeological localities. As attractive as an archaeologically based narrative of local powers can be, however, the aim of the present work is to focus on political entities who aimed at the control of a larger domain beyond their own local contexts. As a result, this book starts its narrative with Elam, the influential civilization and kingdom that existed long before the Achaemenids came to power. Elam boasted a writing system and a complex culture and political organization contemporaneous with that of Mesopotamia, and was made up of cities such as Susa and Anshan. As Kamyar Abdi shows in his chapter, the Iranian civilization owes much to the Elamites and their worldview and conception of rulership. Thus, we do not start the present narrative with 550 BCE and Cyrus, but with 3000 BCE, in the proto-Elamite Period, when signs of a long lasting civilization on the Iranian Plateau first appeared.

Shabistari's poetry frequently offers a deconstruction of the literalists' views concerning faith and infidelity. Professor Leonard Lewisohn has, not surprisingly, named his masterful study of Shabistari's teachings, Beyond Faith and Infidelity.Professor Lewisohn presents us with a comprehensive study of the historical context and the cultural and literary environment of Shabistari's era. In addition to the more audacious hermeneutical teachings of Sufism like the one explored above, the Garden of Mystery summarizes the Islamic/Hellenistic philosophical tradition, including its cosmological doctrines. Similar teachings can be found in two of Shabistari's less celebrated didactic poems, The Book of Felicity (Sa'adat-nama), and the Truth of Certainty about the Knowledge of the Lord of the Worlds (Haqq al-yaqin fi ma'rifat rabb al-'alamin).Shabistari's poetic style and language are occasionally quite obscure, even for an educated Persian speaker. Shabistari had chosen to render complex metaphysical doctrines into verse and, in so doing, was constrained by the conventions of meter and rhyme expected in his day. He claimed that the concise, aphoristic flashes of his spiritual insights came through selfless inspiration, nearly through revelation. Not surprisingly, many of his couplets need years of thought and meditation to digest. Shabistari's genius can only be appreciated through attentive study, usually with the help of well-informed commentaries. Professor Lewisohn's Beyond Faith and Infidelity is as close as non-Persian speakers will get to the best of the original commentaries. His profound understanding of Persian history and the Sufi literary tradition, along with his many years as a practicing Sufi, make this book one of the finest works ever written on Islamic spirituality.
