A patagonian fox pads toward the camera, curious, wary. Fire bush, hot red, frames a glacier. Snow that will never melt glows orange in sunset. Crumbling cliffs line a milky lake. Standing in hundreds on a rocky shore, penguins look as if they are there by accident. Hauf captures all this and dozens of other images of startling fields of wildflowers, llamas on the run, and small villages turned to the sea rather than the tail of the Andes in Patagonia. Chile and Argentina share this coda of landscape at the end of the world, as Conger Beasley, Jr. explains in the accompanying text, but it seems to belong primarily to itself as one of the last wild places, even in those portions encompassed in national parks. The Himalayas have a special appeal to Tim, having returned three times since his initial visit and trek to Everest Base Camp in 1999.
