Dibdin's Bibliomania is an anthem to the printed book, a warning to the unwary about the perils of obsessive book-collecting, and the confessions of a rabid book-collector. As a casual glance at the book will show, Dibdin's footnotes predominate over text, and it is in the footnotes that the interest lies. They invite questions as often as they answer them. What is the supposed similarity between 'Orator' Henley's library and Addison's memoranda for the Spectator? What cutting words did Edward Gibbon write about Thomas Hearne? Why should we not be surprised to find a book on American history by a Spanish admiral in the library of the President of the Royal Society? Who was Captain Cox who 'could talk as much without book, as any Innholder betwixt Brentford and Bagshot'? Was Polydore Vergil a plagiarist and John Bagford a biblioclast? What is bloterature? Sometimes Dibdin tells us, sometimes he assumes we know, and sometimes he chooses to tantalise us. The endnotes provide some of the answers and will, it is hoped, lead readers to discover new books and new writers, or, more often and more pleasurably, old books and old writers. This book is based upon Dibdin's first edition of 1809, to which have been added an introduction and eighty-five pages of valuable endnotes, mostly concerned with biographical details of the printers, librarians, bookbinders, writers, book-collectors and Bibliomaniacs to whom Dibdin refers. An appendix contains John Ferriar's Bibliomania, the poem which prompted Dibdin's work. There are also a substantial bibliography and index. This book will be invaluable to bibliographers, librarians, cultural historians and all those interested in books and book people. It gives a valuable insights into antiquarianism in general and book-collecting in particular. Dibdin's book ranges widely, from Juliana Barnes, Wynkyn de Worde, Michael Maittaire and the St Albans Schoolmaster, to Thomas Hope, Edward Rowe Mores, William Hunter and Horace Walpole. Many of his footnotes (which take up far more of the book than the text) contain details of the important book sales of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century to tantalise the reader: Caxton's Boke of Chivalrie selling for 11 shillings in 1756; Grenville's 1800 edition of Homer selling for an astounding £99 15s in 1804. Peter Danckwerts studied Book Publishing at Oxford Polytechnic, Bibliography & Textual Criticism at the University of Leeds, Mathematics with the Open University, and Medieval Studies at Birkbeck College, University of London. Henry Sweet (1845-1912) was educated at King's College School, London, the University of Heidelberg and Balliol College, Oxford. He was an active member of the Philological Society and served as its president from 1876 to 1878. He was a member of the Royal Danish Academy and a corresponding member the Munich and Royal Prussian Academies of Sciences. Despite his outstanding intellectual abilities and talent for teaching, it was only in 1901 that he was given a readership in Phonetics at Oxford University. The character of Professor Higgins in Shaw's Pygmalion was partly based upon Sweet.

Thompson's History of English Handwriting charts the development of the distinctive, and often very beautiful, English scripts, beginning with the introduction of half uncials by Irish monks in the seventh century. Although manuscripts from Rome and elsewhere on the Continent influenced English handwriting, it displayed unique characteristics which even the Norman Conquest did not completely obliterate. The basis of this book is a paper delivered to the Bibliographical Society in 1899 and printed in the Society's Transactions the following year. It has been revised by Gerrish Gray who has taken the opportunity to increase the number of illustrations from eighteen to forty-eight. Transcriptions have been added to eight of these, making the book a useful introduction to English palaeography. Sources of illustrations include Bibles, psalters, chronicles, charters and literary manuscripts. Sir Edward Maunde Thompson (1840-1929) was educated at Rugby and University College, Oxford. Lack of money forced him to leave the University without taking a degree, and in 1861 he found employment at the British Museum as assistant to Sir Anthony Panizzi, the Principal Librarian. He transferred to the Department of Manuscripts in 1862, being made Assistant Keeper in 1871. He was made Keeper of Manuscripts in 1878 and Principal Librarian in 1888. His highly-regarded Introduction to Greek and Latin Palæography was first published in 1893 and revised in 1912.

The venerable Bede (AD 672-735) was not the first historian of the British Isles, but he was the first to to list and master his documentary and oral sources. For a man who travelled little, he showed a great depth of understanding about the outside world, informing himself by commissioning others to copy documents in the Papal Regista and various episcopal and monastic archives. This new edition has been carefully revised by Gerrish Gray and is beautifully typeset in Bembo type.

The book usually known as Kennedy's Revised Latin Primer has remained, with good reason, the pre-eminent Latin reference grammar in British schools and universities for many decades. Kennedy's New Latin Primer from Tiger Xenophon is the first entirely new edition in two generations, and the first to be offered in a form suitable for the American market. As well as clearer and more legible typography, this new edition has been modernized for today's readers. In earlier editions the English was occasionally almost as alien to the novice as the Latin - with, for instance, quocumque being translated as t soever. This and many other relics of a bygone age have been revised without the "dumbing down" which afflicts so many modern textbooks. The sections on pronunciation have been revised to reflect modern scholarship.

Although it has no modern descendants, Gothic is a language of considerable importance in the study of the Germanic languages, including English. The surviving texts consist mostly of the New Testament translations commissioned by the fourth-century Bishop Wulfi la (Ulfi las). This classic grammar contains extracts from these texts. Joseph Wright (1855-1930) started work at the age of six as a donkey-boy in the local stone quarry. The next year he went to work in a woolen mill. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, Wright tired of relying on his literate workmates for news and taught himself to read. Soon he was attending night school, and he later started his own night school, the money from which supported his study of Mathematics and German at the University of Heidelberg. After further studies at London, Heidelberg and Leipzig, he became a lecturer at Oxford, and eventually Professor of Comparative Philology. Among his many books was the English Dialect Dictionary.

The present dialects of Italy are descendants of Latin. But in nearly all regions it was a Latin influenced in its vocabualry and pronunciation by the earlier linguistic habits of the populations that had adopted it. These peoples contain a strong admixture of Ligurian, Gallic, Illyrian, Greek and Phoenician nationalities, and of Italic tribes whose native tongue was related to Latin, for instance, Umbrian and Oscan. Sweet's Anglo-Saxon Primer is possibly the most popular Old English textbook ever written, and with good reason. It is brief and accessible without being unduly simplistic. Students will find that the grammar and glossary make the sample texts far less daunting than they might expect, and will give them the confidence to read more widely in Old English. Henry Sweet (1845-1912) was a leading expert on phonetics and Old English and was partly the basis for the character of Henry Higgins in Shaw's Pygmalion. He was appointed Reader in Phonetics at the University of Oxford in 1901.
