This book contributes to the ongoing discussions and discourses about processes of economic globalization and the so-called feminization of labor that accompany the economic and social transformations taking place world-wide. The focus is on the new modes of industrial production, notably in the export-oriented manufacturing sector in Bangladesh, where there is an increased participation of women in the workforce. The book intends to show how the Bangladeshi women workers view themselves and their actions within the given cultural, political and economic setting. Their migration pattern and motives and the recruitment strategies, from the point of the employers as well as the workers are analyzed. Furthermore, the construction of skill, working conditions and the workers strategies concerning promotions and turnovers are also discussed with reference to approaches about labor market behavior. Additionally, the newly emerging patterns of living arrangements and new domestic relations closely linked to factory work are described and reconstructed according to the narratives of the workers. Strategies of resistance, collective action and their first attempts at organization building are discussed to show that they have room for maneuvering and to develop some suggestions on their future perspectives. The women workers are not simply passive victims of global processes. In a relatively short time they have been able to exploit the new opportunities but have also experienced new insecurities and new modes of control. These are part of the dynamic interplay between local and global structures and reveal the complex, interactive and nonlinear aspects of change. Petra Dannecker lectures at the Faculty of Sociology at Bielefeld University, Germany. She did her M.A. in Political Science from Konstanz University, Germany. In 1998 she received her Ph.D. at the Sociology of Development Research Center at Bielefeld University for her study on women garments workers in Bangladesh.

Bangladeshi Women Workers and Labour Market Decisions: The Power to Choose

<p>Fifty years of independence has not provided the degree of economic growth, social enlightenment of political stability that had been the hope and aspiration of more than a billion people who live in South Asia. Moudud Ahmed has attempted to explain some of the reasons why the countries of South Asia and in particular India have not measured up to their potential. This is principally glaring when their achievements are stacked against those of some of the South-East Asian countries who were more disadvantaged economically and socially three decades ago but can now project a far better national scenario than any of the countries of South Asia. The author feels that India, as the predominant political and economic power in South Asia has failed to provide a viable growth model for development nor has helped assuage the social and political fears of its much smaller neighbors. The issues of Kashmir and nuclearisation not only pose the most immediate threat to security of the region but the consequent arms race between India and Pakistan was drastically retarding the development of the region. He contends that Bangladesh's role within South Asia is many ways unique. Its problems of development, economic, social and political, are examined in detail and the author does not shy away from mentioning the reasons for the existing state of affairs. In his vision, however, the author finds that Bangladesh has a great potential and it could lead the South-Eastern part of the sub-continent into a region of prosperity. Finally, the author underscores a number of suggestions, which could help improve the situation and prepare the region to face the challenges of globalization.</p>

The thirteen stories in this collection span a period of nearly thirty years, from the early sixties to the late nineties, and are the works of some of the most respected fiction writers of Bangladesh. No connoisseur of Bangla literature will dispute the fact that an anthology of short stories by writers from Bangladesh cannot be complete without them. However, the problems of logistics make it the editor's painful duty to exclude all but just a few out of a vast array of superb literary creations. Even so, the expatriate Bangla speaking community who have made their second home outside Bangladesh, especially the third generation who have had little chance to acquire the kind of fluency of their mother tongue that would enable them to read Bangla literature with facility, are sure to find in these stories the true flavour of their linguistic and cultural heritage.
