ABOUT THE BOOK
"In dealing with Andres Bonifacio and the Katipunan, I have laid more emphasis on the latter than on its founder and organizer, firstly because of the dearth of materials on his life, and secondly, because it is my belief that Bonifacio can best be sen and appreciated against the backdrop of the revolutionary society. He could not have been greater than the Katipunan. Nor could he have risen above it. To understand him, one must understand the Katipunan. He looms great because of the society. He must, therefore, be seen in and through the Katipuanan, and this method of unraveling the thin and scattered threads of his life is valid only because of the lack of materials.
 In examing my sources of information, I have adopted the attitude of friendly hostility. It has been my experience that most of the errors in the difficult task of interpretation--which, after all, is the most important in any book--spring from the scholar's uncritical attitude. He takes for granted that the fame of an author is sufficient guaranty of reliability and competence. Such mental outlook smacks of hypocrisy and cowardice. I have, therefore, dismissed this line of reasoning as inadequate. In this book, I have subjected my sources to a severe scrutiny, looked for loopholes, inconsistencies, and inaccuracies in order to arrive at a balanced conclusion. Ricarte, for instance, hitherto, regarded as incontrovertible, is, after a careful examination, not always accurate and reliable. So is General Pio del Pilar. So are certain documents on the trial and death of Bonifacio. And so are some of the opinons expressed by the great scholars Epifanio de los Santos and Teodoro M. Kalaw. I shall probably hear loud protests and whispered innuendos, but I invite the potential objectors to my method to read my Notes carefully, for in them I have embodied th reasons for repudiating some of the claims of famous scholars, for simissing this authroity and for accepting that document."

Philippine Folk Literaure: The Folktales is Volue IV in the eight volume Philippine Folk Literature Series.This present collection focuses on folktales, defined in this work as fictional folk narratives, which are not considered as dogma or history: they may or may not have happened and are not to be taken seriously. But though they are told mostly for amusement, they perform an important teaching function as well.An "Introduction" defines the folktale and distinguishes it from the myth and the legend, briefly surveys folktale collecting activities in the Philippines: and gives a detailed discussion, with illustrative examples from the collection and elsewhere, of the different types and sub-types of Philippine folktales.The tales are presented according to the following types and subtypes:Animal tales: Fables (animal and plant); Marchen, or Tales of Magic: Religious and Didactic Tales; Novelistic Tales; and Jocular tales, Numskull Tales, and other Humorous anectdotes.The tales are given in English translation, in order to make them accessible to an international readership.As in the other volumes in the series, this collection is intended to be national in scope. Care was therefore taken to ensure that it contains as wide a representation as possible of the different types and sub-types of the folktale and that it represents as many Philippine ethnolinguistic groups as possible.

PREFACEThis book really started NVM's passion with the art of writing. Swallow Press in Denver, Colorado, first printed the book in 1947. Professor Alan Swallow believe that these short stores abou the Philippine life were worth sharingwith American readers. The first to appreciate this slim volume of short stories was the Director of Humanities Division of the Rockefeller Foundation, Dr Charles Fahs. He came to the Philippines and sought out NVM who was then editor of the Evening News Maagazine. In 1949 NVM was named the first Filipino fellow of the Humanities Division of the Rockefeller Foundation.  NVM did not try to earn a degree. He wanted instead to meet with writers and critics teaching in selected universities in the U.S. He started in Stanford University and met Wallace Stegner and Katherine Porter. His two classmates in Stanford, Ed Loomis (University of Santa Barbara) and Bob Williams (of California State University, Hayward) were later responsible in asking NVM to go to the U.S. to teach.
