During the Gettysburg Campaign, the small community of Cashtown, Pennsylvania found itself in the midst of the great events that occurred during those fateful days in June and July of 1863.  Cashtown would see over two-thirds of General Robert E. Lee’s famed Army of Northern Virginia march through seemingly on the cusp of victory in late June, only to see that same army a few days later, much reduced and defeated, on its agonizing retreat towards the Potomac River in the aftermath of the Battle of Gettysburg.  This is the story of that community and its people, during one of the most critical military campaigns in American history.   A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will go towards efforts of historical preservation and memorialization in and around Cashtown.

On February 2, 1864, a 900 man Union garrison near the small eastern North Carolina town of Newport found itself under attack by over 2,500 Confederates. Despite being outnumbered and facing almost three to one odds, the Union forces fought three separate engagements over an almost ten mile front in western Carteret County. After a day of combat lasting over ten hours, Union troops were compelled to retreat in the face of an overwhelming Confederate onslaught. Ultimately three members of the 9th Vermont infantry were awarded the Medal of Honor for their actions which saved their comrades from certain capture. The Battle of Newport Barracks was the culmination of a brilliant operation commanded by Brigadier General James G. Martin and marked a rare Confederate victory in a theater of the Civil War where fortunes rarely favored Southern forces. Often viewed as a mere footnote to the larger Confederate attempt to recapture New Bern, this is the story of the men and the town caught in the middle of the largest and bloodiest battle to take place in Carteret County during the Civil War.

The Civil War was perhaps the defining moment in American history, with about 620,000 lives lost and hundreds of thousands more left maimed or suffering in pain the rest of their lives. Yet, despite the horrors of the battlefield, the vast majority of a soldier's daily life was spent either in camp or on campaign. During and after the war, many men, as well as civilians, left written accounts of their activities. Some of these are humorous, some are ironic; some are tragic. Historians Scott L. Mingus and Dr. Thomas M. Mingus have culled through hundreds of these accounts to select some of the very best human interest stories, rewording and condensing them for the modern reader. Here is one example: On one chilly April night, a raw Union recruit was on guard duty at the sprawling prisoner-of-war facility at Camp Chase near Columbus, Ohio. He was wide awake and excited at the prospect of preventing any prison escapes. Near dawn, he perceived in the growing light what he believed to be a man dressed in gray. In his eagerness, he did not call out the usual challenge, but instead immediately leveled his rifle and fired a bullet at the shadowy stranger. His fellow guards, also somewhat jittery, also began blazing away. Soon the entire camp was aroused, and a long drum roll called out the remaining Union soldiers. Many were only half-dressed, but they nonetheless were ordered to fall in. The soldiers dispersed check on the whereabouts of each Rebel prisoner, but the investigation revealed that all were in their usual places of confinement. None had escaped.           So, at what had the jittery inexperienced guards fired their weapons? As the daylight increased, it soon became evident that the overly anxious sentinel had killed a nearby farmer’s cow.

Loperfido, Benton's honesty, raw emotion and passion for his work give insight into what life was like for the men who worked long and difficult hours to save the lives of the men who gave so much for the preservation of this nation. Benton served with the 111th New York as an assistant surgeon through such battles as Harpers Ferry, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, and the siege of Petersburg.  In 1865 Benton becomes the surgeon of the 98th New York where he remains until the end of the war.

The talented William Dorsey Pender is a prime example of the advantage held by the Confederacy in junior-level commanders during the opening months of the Civil War. Pender, a native North Carolinian, graduated in the top half of the West Point class of 1856. One of the first Southern-born officers to offer his services to the Confederacy, Pender first came to prominence during the Seven Days' Battles, when a number of junior Confederate officers took bold action to counter the battlefield errors of some of their better-known superiors.  Pender soon developed a reputation as Robert E. Lee's favorite brigade commander. After further capable service at Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, Pender was promoted to divisional command. Arriving at Gettysburg on the first day of the battle, Pender's troops from Georgia, South Carolina and his own North Carolina played a major role in driving the veteran Union I Corps from the town. Unfortunately, Pender sustained what at first seemed a minor wound later in the battle and died of complications after the Confederate retreat back to Virginia. The inability of the less-populous Confederacy to replace key figures such as Pender was an important cause of the ultimate Southern defeat.
