This book introduces you to remote sensing and control projects using the Arduino Uno and the 433 MHz transmitter/receiver (Tx / Rx) modules. We have been quite specific in our coverage in an attempt to thoroughly explore the subject with particular reference to a pair of readily available and inexpensive remote control modules. These modules have a good transmission range and are simple to use – particularly with the library that we have created to simplify the sending and receiving of data.Assumed Level of Previous Knowledge  While this book is intended to be an informative source for a broad range of experimenters, it has been written with a narrow focus on a particular topic (remote sensing and control) using a particular resource (the 433 MHz modules). We expect that the reader will have conducted at least a few basic Arduino experiments and will have gained some familiarity with the programming language. We provide program notes for most experiments where we attempt to outline the purpose and working of the code. While we don’t explain the program code in every detail, the programs are internally documented to indicate the purpose of relevant lines of code.Why We Have Created this Book and How it Teaches You There were two main thoughts behind this book: to investigate various remote control projects, and to do this with reference to a specific component through a series of related projects each involving a short set of experiments in which the user could gradually build up their knowledge and that additional programming code could be introduced in a readily understandable way. We wanted the reader to feel that having completed the book, they would be confident in setting up any project using these modules.

The authors are two individuals of different ages and from very different educational backgrounds. One suffers from mental health issues including Asperger's Syndrome and Complex Personality Disorder. The other is an alcoholic in sustained recovery. Meeting through a mix of family and social connections they discovered a mutual value in the use of poetry in dealing with their respective problems. This collection of poems aims to promote awareness and support to those affected and their families. They have no base in theoretical models of mental health and addiction but reflect the harsh reality of lived experience of themselves and others. The fact that they are based on personal experiences will hopefully provide information and understanding in a non-didactic manner. Some may appear direct and brutal, whilst others may show an element of wry humour. This mix is intentional since they are dealing with serious and sometimes deadly conditions. Both authors recognise the crucial value of openly discussing such personal issues in peer support and this is something that is actively encouraged. It is hoped that readers will derive as much from their efforts as they did in writing them. They have delivered poetry to audiences as part of the annual Positive Images Festival in Coventry, with subsequent publication in the festival's own booklet and Chatterbox magazine. They have also delivered poetry sessions to the Coventry and Warwickshire Mind writing group.

Lordswood Boys' School had been failing so badly for so long that the Department for Education became concerned enough to call for a major shake-up. It was duly delivered through a transformative trio who had somehow become headteachers against the odds. One had left his own school in Bradford, aged fourteen, with no qualifications whatsoever. Another had turned down the chance to train as a teacher at the prestigious Goldsmith's College in London so that he could go to a polytechnic close to the home of his beloved Manchester City. The third had once been the lead vocalist in a Brummie heavy-metal band. Three years after they took over, LBS has become one of the highest achieving non-grammar schools in Birmingham. GCSE results are well above the national average. Yet the vast majority of pupils live in poor parts of the city. Some arrived in the UK comparatively recently. Most are Asian or black. One boy, half Chinese and half Indian, won a scholarship from Lordswood to Eton. Another, of Pakistani heritage, had somewhat surpassed predictions by gaining grade eights, the equivalent of A*s, in English language and literature. There are more heartening stories. Many more. One or two sad stories too as students and staff talk to author and former national journalist Chris Arnot against the background of a rampaging pandemic.
