During the ten years that Cyprian was bishop of Carthage (A.D. 249-258) there were five bishops of Rome (Fabian, Cornelius, Lucius I, Stephen I and Sixtus II). Cyprian’s literary output deals with some of the most challenging issues faced by pre-Nicene Christianity: the Decian persecution and the problem of lapsed Christians, and the subsequent so-called rebaptism controversy. This book investigates the history of Cyprian's interactions with, and attitudes towards, each of those Roman bishops. Many previous attempts at explaining Cyprian's point of view with regard to the role and position of the church of Rome have concentrated on Cyprian's use of terms like cathedra Petri, primatus, and ecclesia principalis in De unitate. This book argues that Cyprian's understanding of these terms and of papal primacy in general is best determined from the wider context of his actual interactions with the bishops of Rome, as illustrated in his letters. 
After a thorough re-examination of Cyprian’s treatises and letters, it is concluded that Cyprian often regarded the support of the Roman church as crucial for him to manage the affairs of his own church in Carthage and the other churches of North Africa, because Rome was a large, prestigious and influential church. However, Cyprian's disagreement with a number of Rome’s positions reveals that he did not believe it had a jurisdictional primacy over churches outside its own prouincia. Cyprian's ecclesiology was a collegial one where frequent letter-writing and synodal gatherings were the means by which decisions could be reached and implemented.

Simply put, sinners by nature or sinners by choice are the traditionalpositions of Western and (Near) Eastern branches of the Church. JohnChrysostom, an early fifth century Bishop of Constantinople, took the latterposition. Having gained a basic anthropology from his training in the Greekpaideia, he understood the mindset (γνώμη) to be the centre ofresponsibility of the person. Repeatedly in his homilies, the γνώμη is heldresponsible for sin in action, thought, and intention. The mindset evaluatespassions and thoughts, and then directs the προαίρεσις (the moral choice)towards the end decided by the γνώμη. The γνώμη, a store of deliberatedattitudes, is the very lodging-place of sin in the psyche. Chrysostom,holding our basic nature to be unchangeable, found in the γνώμη, a facultyof the soul distinct from nature, a citadel of sin needing to be overcome bythe power of the Gospel. Then the person with a renewed mindset sets aboutshaping it to be conformed to the image of Christ.Ray Laird has been lecturing in Church History and Theology for over thirtyyears in Bible/theological colleges in Australia, and has served as Principalof two colleges and Dean of the South Australian Graduate School ofTheology. Product Description This book examines the compiled letters of Barsanuphius and John, each a respected holy man, analyzing both their view of charity (giving gifts, welcoming strangers, and caring for the sick) and investigating the relationship between social inferiors, wealth and benefactors. Against the geographical, socioeconomic, intellectual and religious background of the city of Gaza during Late Antiquity, it investigates the spiritual guidance provided by the Gazan holy men in relation to giving gifts to the poor, entertaining strangers, and caring for sick laymen and monks. While Barsanuphius and John suggest an ideal guideline regarding charity, they also offer realistic advice to their lay and monastic disciples on the basis of their personal circumstances. They consider not only the beneficiaries, but also the benefactors, offering spiritual direction with a view to their spiritual and ascetic wellbeing. This style of spiritual direction is related to their self-understanding as spiritual fathers, meditators and intercessors, as well as defenders of the faith and their disciples. About the Author Hyung Guen Choi is a research fellow of HK+ Project team, Institute for Theology at Anyang University (Anyang, Korea). He received a BA in philosophy from Changwon University, a Th.M from Presbyterian University and Theological Seminary (PUTS) in Church History, and a M.A and Ph.D from Macquarie University (Sydney) in Ancient History, with special attention given to the monastic movement in late antique Palestine.
