Signed and Numbered Limited Edition of 500 Hardbound Copies Forward by Playboy Executive Editor Jason Buhrmester He Ain't No Vargas is a limited edition book containing an extensive collection of grease pencil nudes utilizing playboy magazine covers as canvases by Derek Hess. The pieces were created using 1960s and 1970s era Playboys-- the very same issues Hess first discovered as a fourth grader. The nostalgia brought back by the taboo material of Hess' childhood made the project even more fun for the artist. Drawing loose and fast, Hess was able to capture the vibrant feeling of the figure. The book has drawings spanning from the beginning of his experimentation with Playboys back in 2010 all the way into his most recent works done in August 2013. Vargas refers to the artist Alberto Vargas, who was responsible for the pin-up nudes in Playboy for decades, and the book title is a tongue in cheek shot at Hess and his ability to draw. To honor Mental Health Awareness Month in May of 2017, Derek posted a daily image to his social media outlets that showcased his ongoing battle with Dual Diagnosis, a term for those who struggle with both mental illness and substance abuse. This book, 31 Days In May, is a look at the link between creativity and disturbed mental states, as told through Derek artwork. What started off as self-exploration quickly turned into a personal journey for those among Derek s followers who were dealing with mental health and addiction issues of their own. Topics such as loneliness, relationships, depression and suicide are beautifully and painfully depicted throughout the book with the hope that it not only helps dispel some of the negative stereotypes surrounding mental illness, but also helps to educate readers, and shows others so afflicted that they aren t alone. Along with the 31 images that were originally posted, Derek included additional thematically-linked pieces, resulting in a generous book of over 150 pages filled with stunning art. The book concludes with a gallery of Derek Hess-inspired tattoos (see next page), which fans of his art and message have gotten to help deal with their own mental health issues.

Please God Save Us is a book of art and words written by internationally known artist Derek Hess and Cleveland politician Kent Smith. Initially created as an avenue for Hess to vent his frustration with the current administration, the work then became a one-night only art show in Hess hometown of Cleveland and got such a strong response it seemed natural to want to share it with people of all political and religious denominations. The book addresses a variety of topics including: the Republican Party, the Christian right, America s foreign policy, the environment, the Iraq War, stem cell research, evolution, rock and roll, the Fox News channel, Sponge Bob and Santa Claus. Please God Save Us is intended to educate and inspire its readers whether or not they agree with either the art or the words. The book is not, however, meant to be an attack on Christianity but rather an interpretation of how religion is perverted to fit the needs of its followers, whomever they may be.
