Im Rahmen einer sinnvollen Neugliederung des Biologiestudiums ist man an den meisten Universitaten vom Schema der beiden klas sischen ganztagigen GroBpraktika Phanerogamen und Kryptogamen abgegangen und zwar in Bezug auf Umfang wie auch Inhalt Es erscheint im Hinblick auf eine funktionsbezogene Betrachtungs weise angebracht den Erwerb von Grundkenntnissen in den Paktika nicht nur auf ein morphologisch anatomisches Studium der ein zelnen Taxa zu beschranken sondern dabei die Entwicklung und den funktionellen Zusammenhang der verschiedenen Fortpflanzungs Systeme zu erarbeiten Auf diese Weise dUrfte die Relevanz der Kryptogamen fUr physiologische und genetische Probleme deutlich werden zu deren Bearbeitung sie schon seit einiger Zeit in immer groBerem Umfange verwendet werden Unter diesen Gesichtspunkten haben wir versucht unsere bisherige Praktikums Erfahrung mit Kryptogamen zusammenzustellen Auf der Basis eines straff gefaBten lehrbuchartigen Textes werden Ubungs anleitungen vorgelegt die als EinfUhrung in die Kryptogamen kunde gedacht sind Die Bakterien werden nicht behandelt da diese nach den neueren Studienplanen in mikrobiologischen Kursen angeboten werden Der Stoff ist als ein Maximalprogramm anzu sehen das dem Studenten eine Ubersicht Uber den morphologisch anatomischen Aufbau und Uber die wichtigsten Aspekte der Fort pflanzung dieser Pflanzengruppe vermitteln dem Veranstalter des Kurses die Moglichkeit zur Auswahl bestimmter Objekte bie ten solI Ferner solI das Buch erste Anleitungen bei der Einar beitung in ein neues Forschungsobjekt aus dem Bereich der nie deren Pflanzen vermitteln

The theme of this work is the application of the engmeermg theory of frictional torque to total hip replacement. The author adhered tenaciously to this theory, involving the use of a small-diameter femoral head, throughout the epoch when the large-diame ter, metal-to-metal design dominated the field. During that considerable period general satisfaction with the early results rendered criticisms of the large-diameter head unwelcome. There was a formidable array of counter criticism: the small head would pierce a film of synovial fluid; the small head would wear the socket too rapidly; the small head would always have a high risk of dislocation; detachment of the trochanter, to achieve precise orientation for the small head, was unacceptable. But all these objections have now been largely overcome. Lubrication of high molecular weight polyethylene (HMWP) on metal is now accepted as being mainly by the boundary regime with thick fluid films playing no part. We now know that HMWP can indeed tolerate the very high stresses imposed by the small head and in tribological theory there may even be some advantage in high stress. Dislocation is now known not to be an automatic sequel to the small head.

In the three years since the publication of the first edition this book has been very well received by those for whom it was intended-candidates for primary examinations in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. In consequence, we make no excuse for repeating the formula of addressing only those facts which are neither speculative nor contentious. An attempt to widen this brief would multiply the length of the book by three or four times and would place it in an identical category with several much larger texts which we recommend at the end of each chapter to those seeking a deeper understanding of any particular subject. As the underlying philosophy remains the same, the main changes in the second edition are the addition of new material and revision of existing material. New material includes subjects in which interest has expanded greatly in recent years (e.g. AIDS) and topics which were inadvertently overlooked before (e.g. congenital adrenal hyperplasia). Revision of existing material has been extensive, with many detailed changes aimed at expanding the factual base while retaining or improving the clarity of explanation. Finally, and probably most important, many of the changes are those which have been suggested by readers and reviewers of the first edition: this feedback has been invaluable to the authors and we now hope will be equally valuable to readers of the new edition.

Focus, Organization, and Content This book, like the first edition, deals with the mass transport processes that take place in living systems, with a focus on the normal behavior of eukaryotic cells and the - ganisms they constitute, in their normal physiological environment. As a consequence of this focus, the structure and content of the book differ from those of traditional transport texts. We do not start with the engineering principles of mass transport (which are well presented elsewhere) and then seek biological applications of these principles; rather, we begin with the biological processes themselves, and then - velop the models and analytical tools that are needed to describe them. This approach has several consequences. First of all, it drives the content of the text in a direction distinctively different from conventional transport texts. This is - cause the tools and models needed to describe complex biological processes are often different from those employed to describe more well-characterized inanimate systems. Many biological processes must still be described phenomenologically, using me- odologies like nonequilibrium thermodynamics. Simple electrical analogs employing a paucity of parameters can be more useful for characterization and prediction than complex theories based on the behavior of more well-defined systems on a laboratory bench. By allowing the biology to drive the choice of analysis tools and models, the latter are consistently presented in the context of real biological systems, and analysis and biology are interwoven throughout.
