In 1868 Alexander Barrington Irvine's Atlantic City provided a creation story for a burgeoning city that is part romance, part myth, and part sales pitch. Told with humor and imbued with a steadfast belief in the beneficent power of free enterprise, this first history of Atlantic City provides a detailed and entertaining description of the early years, before the arrival of the "fashionable gaming table." Writing under the  pseudonym "Carnesworthe," Irvine hoped to provide "a guide as well as a history." The result combines the best of both in what remains a quirky and enjoyable tale.

Dallas Lore Sharp was born in 1870 in Haleyville, Cumberland County, New Jersey. After a childhood spent exploring the fields, forests, and swamps of South Jersey, he attended Brown University and eventually became Professor of English at Boston University. Writing in the first quarter of the twentieth century, Sharp was among the most popular nature writers of his time. He mused on aspects of nature that could be found in one's backyard - native birds, small mammals, creeks, trees and loose fall leaves - successfully translating the wild world into his readers' living rooms. The present volume is a selection of essays from The Whole Year Round, originally published as four shorter texts, each based on a season. In these essays Sharp concentrates upon the small scale of the natural world, a focus that highlights the grandness of nature as a whole.

James Still was perhaps the most gifted physician in South Jersey during the nineteenth century. He was also African American, the son of former slaves, who received no more than six months of traditional schooling, and was self taught in both medical knowledge and practice. Born in Washington Township, Burlington County, New Jersey - now Shamong - Dr. Still overcame poverty and racial animus to become one of the wealthiest men in South Jersey during his lifetime. This republication of his autobiography, self-published in 1877, is a stirring reminder of the power of self determination and faith.

This is the second issue of SoJourn, a journal dedicated to publishing articles describing the history, culture, and geography of South Jersey—the eight southernmost counties of New Jersey. This issue reaches back to the eighteenth century, albeit through discussion of a mid-nineteenth century novel, and stretches forward to the summer of 2016, describing a day spent with a Leeds Point crabber. Known as the Father of the Underground Railroad for his efforts in moving fugitive enslaved Africans while recording their harrowing stories, William Still lived a life dedicated to the betterment of all mankind during the dark days of American slavery. His book The Underground Rail Road, first published in 1872, provides a first-hand account of the tribulations faced by those seeking to live free from bondage. Born in Shamong, Burlington County, New Jersey, during 1821, William was the son of slaves, which provided him with the impetus to aid others. His faith and determination made him an extraordinary man whose life is worthy of study. This is a reprint of James P. Boyd's biography of William Still, included with the 1886 edition of The Underground Rail Road, with new foreword by Samuel C. Still III, appendices, and index.
