Renowned post-war Japanese architect Kazuo Shinohara always placed great emphasis on the presentation of his works in magazines, enabling his efforts through various methods of expression: photography, commentary and analysis, and detailed diagrams. This special issue is dedicated to his works, wherein previously published materials are featured almost identically to the form in which they were initially presented in both ‘JA’ and ‘Shinkenchiku’ magazines. Including more than 50 works and projects, from private houses to public buildings and urban visions, plus an essay by architect Shin-ichi Okuyama, it is an authoritative and complete overview of his career.

JA99 Autumn 2015 is a special issue focused on the residential projects by Kazuyo Sejima. From her very first house Platform (1988) to Gifu Kitagata Apartment Sejima Wing (2000) to the most recent Inujima Project (2007-), the issue features 29 works of "living space" by both Sejima and SANAA, the practice led with her partner Ryue Nishizawa. Some of the photos, including the cover photo, were taken by photographer Takashi Honma specially for this issue. In the project descriptions - written by the architect - Sejima shares her thoughts she had while designing a project and the developments of the ideas in subsequent works. Architect Arata Isozaki, who has observed Sejima's works since her early career, discusses her stance toward architecture and how people live in the 21st century.

A distinguishing feature of Japan is the large proportion of young people owning land and engaging architects. These clients have generally studied residential designs closely before approaching the architect, therefore the resulting new homes tend to be on the experimental side. •Kengo Kuma's work in JA 109 is organized by material type and his projects are guided by a 3 layer process - materials, methods, and geometry Over the last 30 years Kengo Kuma has been working to re-introduce materials, support skilled craft, and connect people and projects to their surroundings. JA 109 presents his work through the framework of his focus on materiality. Kuma has developed a 3 layer process - materials, methods, and geometry, which is used to guide his work. In practice, this turns into decisions on the type of material used, assembly method, and resulting form. This issue is organized by the material type of each project and is visualized in a diagram that describes his work history. Wood is frequently Kuma's material of choice and projects such as Sunny Hills Japan and the Yusuhara Wooden Bridge Museum are featured. Other projects combine materials such as earth, stone, metal, tile, glass, and membranes to showcase the continuous effort that connects each of his works. Text in English and Japanese.

Expo '70 in Osaka was conceived in the late 1960s when the world was facing changing values in the midst of social and cultural turbulence. JA 113 is a reprint of selected articles originally published in the May 1970 issue of Shinkenchiku and May/June issue of JA, in commemoration of the upcoming Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025. The emphasis on high tech environments was evident in the Space Frame by Kenzo Tange which housed the Tower of the Sun by Taro Okamoto. The possibilities of advanced engineering were showcased by the Expo Tower by Kiyonori Kikutake and the air supported dome of the United States pavilion. Another highlight was the first ever IMAX film shown in the Fuji Group Pavilion by Yutaka Murata. All of these elements were part of a site master plan created by Kenzo Tange and Uzo Nishiyama. The 114th issue of JA is the first monograph devoted to Hiroshi Nakamura &amp; NAP and features 31 projects since its founding in 2002. From an early age, Nakamura was impressed with how architecture takes shape by building connections between various elements - local history and tradition, materials and craftsmanship, and human lives and philosophies.This led to a design process that seeks to foster better relationships among people, between people and the local community, and people and nature. He achieves this through an analysis of climate, local industry, and landscape to create designs that connect with the behaviors and emotions of the inhabitants. This results in complex forms as in the housing project Dancing Trees, Singing Birds where existing trees are retained and become part of the design. In the Sayama Lakeside Cemetery project, serene interiors and views of the surrounding landscape create a peaceful location for visitors to remember their loved ones. Text in English and Japanese.

After starting his firm in 2001, Manabu Chiba has produced a wide range of works including residences, housing complexes, commercial facilities, schools, and town halls. Additionally, after starting out as an assistant to Tadao Ando at the University of Tokyo, he is now a professor in the Department of Architecture His practice has continually focused on distilling the special characteristics of each building site into the project design Chiba's work on public housing and civic projects are particularly noted for integrating the local community and fostering relationships between workers and visitors</ul> JA 115 is dedicated to the Japanese architect Manabu Chiba and features 24 projects since his firm was established in 2001. Included are completed projects, works in progress, and future proposals. Working through a wide range of building types, he focuses on the special characteristics of the location as well as the people who live and work there. His designs try to build human relationships and communal social situations that are connected to these specific environments. Chiba's work is presented in 3 chapters that correspond to his design methods: floor plans, studies, and photographs. He pays close attention to floor plans as a starting point for his design concepts, while studies represent numerous, different explorations of ideas that unfold through the use of sketches and models. Photographs, on the other hand, are snapshot references of Chiba's buildings as they currently exist. Text in English and Japanese.
