Description: Sessions examines the work of five young designers from the South California Institute of Architecture (SCI-ARC) who are having an impact on architectural practice and discourse. In each of the projects featured here, it is evident that software and hardware are only the beginning of the design process, and that architectural practice is, perhaps, moving on to another level of exploration. Designers George Yu, Marcelo Spina, Marta Mala-Alemany, Benjamin H. Bratton, and Hernan Diaz-Alonso engage in a series of discussions with Jeff Kipnis. These discussions, or "sessions," reveal strengths and inadequacies in the works, and place emphasis on the ideas with which the designers are struggling, rather than focusing on their finished designs.

Monica Ponce de Leon and Nader Tehrani, who work together as Office dA, and Andrew Zago of Zago Architecture, the three experimental architects whose site-specific, student-built installations at SCI-Arc are documented in this book, have all been visiting professors there recently. Through in-depth interviews on their careers and these pieces, Moss makes it clear that he appreciates both their work and their company. This first publication in the Institute's "Make It New" series also includes lectures and photographs.

Paffard Keatinge-Clay is a unique figure in American architectural history. He was born near Stonehenge in England, studied in London and Zurich, worked in both Le Corbusier's studio in Paris and at Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin, and then settled in the American West, where he worked for Skidmore, Owings &amp; Merrill before starting out on his own. While he remained in the U.S. until the mid-1970s, and practiced there, his work remains largely unknown even in San Francisco, where he spent more than 20 years. His brand of orthodox Modernism was decidedly out of step with the prevailing "Bay Area Modernism" exemplified by figures like Moore, Wurster, McCue and Turnbull, who dominated both the academic and professional arenas of the period. Keatinge-Clay had to struggle to execute his own expressive, nonconformist architectural language, and when he did, he garnered minimal recognition. This book brings to light the importance of his work as representative of its time period and clarifies the influences his mentors--including Mies van der Rohe, Richard Neutra and Charles and Ray Eames--had upon it. This is the first retrospective study of Keatinge-Clay's architectural projects and, as such, is an important record of an academically and socially significant body of work.

ONRAMP is a catalog of diverse, compelling and unorthodox work being done by SCI-Arc students. This issue of ONRAMP reflects the messy vitality of our contemporary cultural moment and sets the stage for considering the sometimes conflicting, never static, and often messy array of perspectives on the current state of our discipline, where consensus is hard to come by and the status of the architecture Project is a subject of debate. Another Fine Mess is the rubric through which the plurality of voices, opinions and attitudes, and design work that makes up SCI-Arc presents itself publicly. The issue acts as a project review by considering not only "what we do?" bur more importantly "how did we do?" The issue is organized around three curated sections that are comprised of student projects from the 2011-2012 academic year, with accompanying texts by SCI-Arc faculty.

Fabrication and Fabrication offers a unique look at the current state of digital design and fabrication in contemporary architecture. Alongside an extensive review of work done in SCI-Arc's Robot House, contributions from Eric Owen Moss, Patrik Schumacher, and Peter Testa take stock of what contemporary digital production addresses most effectively, as well as matters it might currently neglect. In addition, the book includes the first English translation of Andries van Onck's 1964 text, Metadesign and important early theorization of computational strategies in architecture.

Fabrication and Fabrication

The Thickening of Time, a new book by senior SCI-Arc faculty Coy Howard, continues the school's tradition of innovation by challenging the current status of digital architecture. Published by SCI-Arc Press in collaboration with the architect, the 288-page volume features Howard's exploration of the aesthetic implication of seductive insinuations, mysterious withholdings, liminal indirections, and subtle allusions in the design of three urban rooftop villa projects. The book features more than 100 carefully constructed and choreographed digital images embedding the deep cultural terroir of the three cities of Los Angeles, Tokyo and New York. Each of the images is constructed to engender a mood and sense of place rather than depict or illustrate an architectural concept. Fusing the avant-garde and the traditional, the designs of the villas create a poetic sense of serenity, where the desires for the future and the memories of the past are sensed simultaneously. Critical essays by Dr. George Rand, Jeffrey Kipnis, and Larry Rouch position the work in a broad range of topics, including the current critical discussions on the impact of digital imagery on architecture.

Trilogy: SCI-Arc Pavilions by Oyler Wu Collaborative documents the conception, design, and fabrication of a series of pavilions built for SCI-Arc between 2011 and 2013. Beginning with Dwayne Oyler and Jenny Wu's 2013 SCI-Arc lecture as a way of outlining their architectural ideas and obsessions related to line-based geometries, the book also includes work of dramatically varying scales developed over the last 6 years. Through images and over 50 drawings by Oyler Wu Collaborative, Trilogy showcases the pavilions in order to document the office's evolution from purely line based geometries to ideas of surface and volume. The book includes essays by Hernan Diaz Alonso, John Enright, Dora Epstein Jones, and a conclusion by Eric Owen Moss.
