This book relates the story of Thomas "Pony" Southwick’s experiences in one of the most famous Civil War regiments—the 5th New York Volunteer Infantry, Duryee’s Zouaves. Southwick subtitles his book "Journal and reminiscences of camp life and the personal experiences on the march and in the field, of an ordinary, common soldier of the Civil War." Yet, his story is far from ordinary. Southwick’s writing style gives an atmosphere that allows the reader to feel as if they are speaking with the old veteran himself. There are many comical and light hearted incidents in the book as well as the gripping battle accounts. Southwick gives a fantastic account of his and the Zouaves’ role at the first battle of the war—Big Bethel. Fort Federal Hill in Baltimore saw many Zouave antics before the unit embarked to participate in the Peninsula Campaign where the unit proves to be one of the most reliable and best fighting outfits in the Army of the Potomac. The Zouaves are involved in the siege of Yorktown but shortly thereafter take up their rifles and participate in the battle of Hanover Court House. The regiment proves its fighting capabilities at Gaines’ Mill and is decimated at Second Bull Run. The battle of Fredericksburg made a big impression on Southwick and he covers that engagement in great detail. Southwick survives the "Mud March" and Chancellorsville to be mustered out with the unit in May 1863. The book was originally published in 1930, but few copies are available today. This reprint contains all the original material plus a new introduction by Brian C. Pohanka and a foreword by Southwick’s great grandson. Fifty-nine biographies on soldiers and officers in the 5th New York mentioned by Southwick are also added. The reprint has 156-pages, including an index, and 25 photographs. One of the most distinguished units to serve in the Civil War was the 42nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (13th Reserves), popularly known as the Bucktails. These men adorned their own caps with bucktails and were thus set apart from the typical Federal soldier by their distinctive plumage. These Pennsylvanians saw action early in the war at Drainesville under the command of Col. Thomas Kane, who later fought with four companies in the Shenandoah Valley, while Major Roy Stone led the additional six companies on the Virginia Peninsula with the Army of the Potomac—both contingents rendering distinguished service. Kane’s men figured prominently at Harrisonburg, Cross Keyes, and Cedar Mountain, while Stone’s soldiers were equally gallant at Mechanicsville, Gaines’ Mill and Charles City Crossroads. Upon reunification of the regiment, they consistently displayed consistent courage and tactical ability on the battlefields of Second Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, The Wilderness, and Spotsylvania. Sometimes the Bucktails stood and fought in a line of battle, but often were detailed as skirmishers and sharpshooters where they could employ their deadly talents more effectively until mustering out on June 11, 1864. 
The gallant service of the original Bucktails led to the call in the summer of 1862 for an entire brigade of Bucktailed regiments. In the end, only two Bucktail regiments managed to take the field—the 149th and 150th Pennsylvania Infantry. The men of the new Bucktail regiments, sought to be worthy of their more famous predecessors. Initially called into service during the 1862 Maryland Campaign, the two regiments were posted for a time in the vicinity of Washington, DC. One company had the illustrious honor to be assigned the duty of protecting President Abraham Lincoln. The greatest trial by fire for these two regiments came at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. Serving side by side in the same brigade, the next blood-letting for the 149th and 150th came during the horrendous fighting at the Battle of The Wilderness in early May 1864. They continued on with the Army of the Potomac through the actions at Spotsylvania, and Petersburg, especially along the Weldon Railroad. With the numerical strength of each regiment greatly reduced, they were withdrawn from the lines and sent to Elmira, New York, in February 1865. 
The Bucktails did the Keystone State proud and earned a noted place in the pantheon of Civil War regiments. Their legacy has had the admiration of many over the years and their fame remains strong today. This book is an extensive photographic look at the three Bucktail regiments, that contains 264 images of these noted soldiers. Each soldier included in the book has been extensively researched, and a detailed biographical sketch is given about each identified Bucktail. Complete with capsule unit histories and a photo index. Just downstream from the village called Shepherdstown, near a shallow crossing called Boteler s Ford, a mill was built to exploit the rich vein of cement found nearby. Life in this idyllic region was interrupted by struggles of the still young nation. Few could have imagined the dramatic events that took place around the ford and mill in September of 1862 when General Robert E. Lee s Army of Northern Virginia entered the region. Union soldiers were sent to oppose this invasion. It is difficult to understate the importance of this offensive, known as the Maryland Campaign of 1862. On September 17th, the two armies clashed around the village of Sharpsburg in the bloodiest single day of combat ever seen in North America. Wounded men streamed across the ford, competing for the road with southern forces still marching toward the conflict. After 12 hours of conflict resulting in 23,000 casualties the two exhausted armies did not renew the contest on the 18th. It was clear to Lee that he must retreat, but also that the crossing would be extremely difficult. While still able to fight, Lee s army was in a precarious and vulnerable position. If pursued, the Army of Virginia might be cornered and destroyed. This campaign was far from over, and only a miracle could save Lee s army. Long overlooked by historians and visitors, the events that took place at Boteler s Ford on September 19 and 20 were critical to the outcome of this campaign. This study for the first time examines in detail the fighting along the Potomac, and places it into the context of the campaign. Long overdue for a detailed study, the events, both heroic and tragic, show that a real battle took place at Shepherdstown. Until now, no full-length detailed narrative of the September 19-20, 1862, engagement on the banks of the Potomac River near the hamlet of Shepherdstown, Virginia (now West Virginia) has ever been written. The Battle of Shepherdstown is largely over shadowed events at nearby Harper s Ferry and Antietam. Yet this fight was unforgettable by those who participated. At least 162 men were killed or mortally wounded in the engagement 63 Confederates and 99 Federals. Eighty-three of the Federal dead came from the freshly recruited 118th Pennsylvania Infantry (Corn Exchange Regiment). Those men from eastern Pennsylvania soaked the bluffs of Shepherdstown with their life-blood. Even three years later at Appomattox Court House, a North Carolinian commented to the men of the 118th that Didn t we give it to you at Shepherdstown? but the Corn Exchange soldiers replied, Now you re surrendering to us. No single Southern regiment met such a fate the worst loss being suffered by the 14th South Carolina Infantry with 13 men killed followed by the 22nd North Carolina Infantry that lost 12. General Maxcy Gregg s South Carolina brigade had 64 casualties, while General William D. Pender s North Carolina brigade lost 63. General James Archer s Tennesseeans, Alabamians, and Georgians had 55 men killed and wounded. Most of the Federal casualties came from Colonel James Barnes Fifth Corps Brigade with 351 men killed, wounded, captured or missing. Of the 677 known casualties, 307 are Confederate soldiers. The book has more than 80 related photos, illustrations and maps. It is a fine tribute to the soldiers both North and South that tramped and fought at Shepherdstown, taking the reader back to the days where combatants struggled on the banks and bluffs of the Potomac. ~~Patrick A. The topic of Custis Lee s capture has certainly been a largely ignored event, seldom receiving more than a mention by historians. Thanks to White s diligent and copious research, this is no longer the case.

The Life of Ely S. Parker: Last Grand Sachem of the Iroquois and General Grant's Military Secretary by Arthur C. Parker with New Foreword by David J. Coles Reprinted by Patrick A. Schroeder Feb. 2005 Among those American Indians who participated in the American Civil War, Ely Samuel Parker remains the best known of those who fought on the Union side. Brevetted a brigadier general, Parker was outranked among American Indians only by Confederate Brigadier General Stand Watie. Parker's fame, of course, is not based solely on his rank. During the last year of the war, he served as Ulysses S. Grant's military secretary; at Appomattox, Parker prepared the official copy of the document that formalized the capitulation of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Parker, a full-blooded Seneca, was born in 1828. He grew up on the Tonawanda Reservation in upstate New York. In addition to his white name, Parker also bore the Indian names of Ha-sa-no-an-da, meaning Leading Name; and Do-ne-ho-ga-wa, Keeper of the Western Door. The young Seneca graduated from Renssalear Polytechnic Institute in 1849. Parker worked as a civil engineer and supervised the building of a customhouse and hospital in Galena, Illinois. There, in 1860, Parker met U. S. Grant. This friendship eventually led to Parker's wartime association with the future Union commander. During the 1840s-1850s Parker rose to a leadership position among the Iroquois, and in September 1851, he was chosen as Grand Sachem of the Six Nations. Upon the outbreak of the Civil War, Parker made several attempts to join the Union army, but was rebuffed. Finally, in the Spring of 1863, an old Galena acquaintance, General John E. Smith, requested Parker's services as an assistant adjutant general, a request endorsed by then Major General Grant. Parker served briefly with Smith, but Grant soon appointed the Seneca an assistant adjutant general on his own staff. Parker stayed on Grant's staff throughout the remainder of the war. In August 1864, Parker received an appointment as Grant's military secretary with the rank of lieutenant colonel. During the Appomattox surrender meeting, Parker recalled when Grant introduced him to Lee: After Lee had stared at me for a moment, he extended his hand and said, I am glad to see one real American here. I shook his hand and said, We are all Americans. After the war, Parker remained Grant's aide-de-camp until the latter's inauguration as president in early 1869. The Seneca leader subsequently became the first American Indian to serve as Commissioner of Indian Affairs, a position he held until August 1871. Parker then invested in Wall Street enterprises, and later, joined the staff of the New York Police Department as a clerk. Suffering from declining health for a number of years, he died on August 30, 1895. 377 pages; 27 photos; index.

Through Wells letters, the reader will become familiar with the inner workings of one of the most successful cavalry regiments in the Civil War capturing 39 cannon, three flags, and 1,000 prisoners in the course of 73 engagements. This new primary source material is appealing to those with various interests in the Civil War outside Wells and the 1st Vermont Cavalry. Wells was captured by Confederate Colonel John Mosby on March 17, 1863, near Herndon, Virginia. Wells was a prisoner of war for seven weeks, spending most of that time at Libby Prison. At Gettysburg, Wells and General Elon Farnsworth rode side by side into the ill-fated July 3, 1863, dash into the Confederate right flank, for which Wells earned the Medal of Honor in that gallant and futile charge. Wells and the regiment also served valiantly in Grant s 1864 Overland Campaign and at Cedar Creek in the Shenandoah Valley on October, 19, 1864. By the last year of the war he was a brigade commander and Major General George Armstrong Custer s right hand man. This book not only gives new insight to Custer through Wells eyes, but other Civil War figures such as Farnsworth, Wilson, Mosby, and Kilpatrick. At first, the letters are written to Wells parents and friends until mid-1863 when he commenced writing to Friend Anna Richardson. At the time Wells was 25 years old. Anna responded positively. The reader can see the relationship develop to the point of marriage in these letters. In one of Wells first letters, he relates how he was almost captured for a second time, but was able to escape only after the loss of his horse and wallet that contained $125. Anna writes of her memories of the short time they had together. The letters compel the reader to see what is written next in this budding relationship and their longing to be together. On a furlough home in January 1865, Wells and Anna became engaged during a sleigh ride the only time they were together since the commencement of their correspondence. In 1865, Wells commanded a brigade that consisted of the 8th New York, 15th New York, 3rd Indiana, and 1st Vermont. In the engagement at Waynesboro, Virginia, on March 2, the brigade captured 15 battle flags while eliminating Confederate General Jubal Early s command. Two days later Anna received a ring, and on March 8, she scrawled her vows in a letter to Wells. At the Battle of Five Forks, Wells wrote Anna that his clothes had six holes made by bullets and that he was hit by a spent piece of shell. On April 3, Wells brigade routes the Confederate Brigade of General Rufus Barringer at Namozine Church. At Appomattox Station on April 8, Wells men were in the thick of the fight capturing a large number of Confederate soldiers and cannon. Then, at Appomattox Court House on April 9th, his men were engaged in some of the last fighting that fateful day when the truce flags are sent out by Lee s army. Following the Appomattox Campaign, Wells was commissioned a full brigadier general and took command of the division, and he mustered out of service on January 15, 1866, and married Anna three days later. Hoffman leaves Wells letters the way they were originally written. Furthermore, nothing has been omitted from the letters to make them politically correct for today s world. War and romance combine to make an intriguing and unique non-fiction work.
