Featuring twenty-four projects completed between 2008-2013, this volume of Building Discourse draws from the M.Arch degree program at MIT Architecture. How do we make sense of the Earth at a moment in which it is presented in crisis? To live in an epoch that is shaped by extensive environmental transformations is to be confronted with risks and uncertainties at scales larger than that of the planet. Paradoxically, while we worry that the sky may be falling on our heads, we remain so immobilized in part maybe because of our failures to comprehend the scales of a story that is difficult both to tell and to hear. Two Cosmograms mediates the dissonance between the environmental question at stake and the narrow repertoire of emotions and imaginations with which we try to understand these issues by exploring speculative fiction as the political art that integrates the story of the cosmos into our own life stories. In response to the expansion of infrastructural systems and resource exploitation beyond the Earth, the two projects - Neck of the Moon and Love your Monsters- engage the architectural imaginations of the Cosmos. The speculative fictions probe the politics and aesthetics of technological systems, both in the extra-planetary environment as well as here on Earth.

Testing to Failure contains a wide selection of research and work from the MIT Department of Architecture, produced between 2009 and 2011. Including student work, the work of professors' own practices, contributions from visiting critics, transcripts from the MIT150 Celebration Symposia, and more, what is presented in this book is a sequence of 'forums,' knots of discussion where the various threads that run through the department reach asymptotically towards definition. Chapter headings include Strategy; Extra Large; Numerics; Global; Archive; Survival; Misuse; and Support. Inspecting our work to find truths is a project of fiction, and it results in a kind of architectural hypochondria. Are we this? Are we that? Is this an infection? What's this bug that we can't shake? But better a hypochondria of productivity, of curiosity, and of possibility than a shortsighted clamoring for false unity.

The Under the Influence book is based upon the eponymous symposium, which brought together scholars and practitioners of architecture in order to focus on one of the most anxious disciplinary topics: influence. The symposium invited each of the participants to illuminate a single term -- a disciplinary synonym for appropriation--and through that term, the specific strategies, historical, and disciplinary circumstances in which it is enmeshed. It was organized and hosted by Ana Miljacki, and presented by the MIT Department of Architecture.
